Europe: Xiaomi finally kicked out Samsung from top spot in Q2 2021 smartphone market

After India, Samsung has started facing tough competition in yet another smartphone market i.e. Europe. Recently, Strategy Analytics published its latest report on the smartphone market of Europe, which shows Xiaomi kicked out Samsung for the first time during the second quarter (Q2 2021).
Xiaomi x Samsung Q2 2021: Europe
According to the report, by defeating all other OEMs, Xiaomi becomes the leading smartphone maker of the European smartphone market during April-June 2021 period. The company shipped the highest 12.7 million units with a 25.3% market share and an excellent 67.1% YoY growth.
Samsung’s no longer leader of Europe!
Samsung, on the other hand, the traditional market leader of Europe slipped to the second spot in Q2 2021 due to the rising popularity of Xiaomi. The Korean tech giant shipped 12 million Galaxies and recorded 24% of the total market share. At the same time, the company’s year-on-year growth decreased by 7%.
Other than Xiaomi and Samsung, Apple secured third place with 9.6 million iPhone shipments, 19.2% market share, and 15.7% year-on-year growth during the same period. However, Apple is expected to launch its new iPhone lineup in September that will help to gain the market share worldwide.

Samsung holds onto top spot but Apple, Xiaomi getting closer

Samsung remained the king in the Q2 2024 market, but Apple and Xiaomi are getting closer. IDC market research data shows that Samsung led the worldwide smartphone market in the second quarter of the year and Chinese brands scored rapid growth.
According to IDC, Samsung sold 53.9 million devices in the second quarter. The company occupied an 18.9% market share internationally. The company has slightly improved its sales share up from 53.5 million units in the same period last year.
The data suggests that Apple ranked second in terms of global volume sales. The iPhone maker shipped 45.2 million devices in Q2, 2024. It captured a market share of 15.8%, a modest increase from 44.5 million shipments in the second quarter of last year.
Third comes Xiaomi. The Chinese brand saw massive growth in sales year over year. It had sold 42.3 million smartphones in the second quarter alone. It’s a big jump from 33.2 million units shipped in Q2 2023, becoming a potential threat to Apple and Samsung.
Apart from this, Vivo also recorded significant growth in the global market. The company’s year-over-year growth in Q2 was 21.9%, with sales listing 25.9 million units with a market share of 9.1%. The growth percentage shows that aggressive marketing and boasting competitive specs into devices is paying off.
Samsung, Apple’s game isn’t over…
Last week, Samsung launched its new foldable phones, releasing on July 24, 2024. Apple, on the other hand, is expected to launch new flagship iPhones in September. It means, Samsung will enjoy the third quarter as well. The fourth quarter might be of Apple as iPhone sales would sharply grow in the global market given the new lineup release.
Samsung is now preparing to unveil new FE products later this year, followed by the S25 series in early next year. Chinese brands are expected to debut their latest flagships in the last quarter of this year, while Google Pixel phones are also coming in August.

Samsung expects massive profit boom in Q2 given AI rise

Samsung today announced provisional sales and profit results for the second quarter. Samsung formally announced the provisional/predicted sales and operating profit, suggesting a massive profit boom in Q2, 2024 given the AI memory semiconductor rise.

The company expects sales of 74 trillion won and operating profit of 10.4 trillion won on a consolidated basis. While these results are not final, there won’t be much change in the final result when it comes out. Samsung had a pretty profitable period in the second quarter.
Samsung in Q2
- Consolidated Sales: Approximately 74 trillion Korean won
- Consolidated Operating Profit: Approximately 10.4 trillion Korean won
The Korean tech giant is currently facing yield issues in its second-generation 3nm process. The flagship Exynos processor is unlikely to be commercialized this year. It would lead the Mobile business to face additional burdens due to rising prices of Snapdragon chipsets.
Meanwhile, Samsung is focussing on HBM (high bandwidth memory) semiconductors. HBM is a key player in artificial intelligence servers and data centers. The booming AI market will directly benefit Samsung’s semiconductor business.

Underdog phone brand jumped 50%, Samsung and Apple lost ground

In Q3 2023, Samsung and Apple’s market share slightly declined, while an underdog Chinese phone brand appeared on the top 5 chart. In a recent development, Canalys published market research data for the third quarter, revealing Tanssion as the fifth best-seller globally.
According to the info, Samsung and Apple lead total sales with 20% and 17% market share, yet both have fallen from their 22% and 18% levels in 2022. However, Tanssion, the maker of Tecno, Itel, and Infinix phones, climbed from 6% global market share last year to 9% in 2023, a 50% jump.

Apart from this, Xiaomi matched last year’s share only by “recovering” from a terrible first half of 2023. At the same time, OPPO has fallen steadily over the past two years, while fellow BBK brand vivo lost the top-5 slot it’s owned for years.
Overall, the global smartphone market underwent a slight drop of 1% in Q3 2023. Bolstered by regional recoveries and new product upgrade demand, the smartphone market recorded a double-digit sequential growth in Q3, ahead of the sales seasons.

Samsung enjoyed 2023’s last victory over Apple?

Recently, research agency Counterpoint Research published their latest analysis. The report reveals that Samsung continued its leadership in the third quarter of 2023, while Apple remained in the second spot. However, both OEMs faced a decline of 1 percent year over year.
According to CR, slower consumer demand is the main factor in the dwindling sales. The market did see a slight 2 percent growth in Q3 compared to Q2, likely driven by last month’s iPhone 15 series launch. Samsung secured 20 percent market share, while Apple grabbed 16 percent sales.

The Galaxy A-series was the key driver for the South Korean smartphone maker. Apple came in second with 16 percent of the market while Xiaomi rounded out the top three with its 12 percent share. Oppo (10 percent) and vivo (8 percent) were the remaining brands in the top five charts.
The newly released iPhone 15 series will help Apple score a lead over Samsung in the fourth quarter of the year. The results will arrive by early next year, and it’s expected that the US phone maker could surpass Samsung. Major camera upgrades and USB-C helped Apple register strong sales.
