Samsung is the global smartphone market leader, says Canalys Q2 2021 report
On July 29, famous market research agency Canalys released a report on the global smartphone market for the second quarter of 2021. The report shows that global smartphone shipments were around 316 million units in this quarter, which is 9% less than the previous quarter.
Speaking about Samsung, the company was the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the second quarter with shipments of 58 million units, an increase of 8% year-on-year, and a market share of 18%.
On the other hand, Xiaomi ranked second with shipments of 52.8 million units, an increase of 83% year-on-year. It’s note worthy that the Chinese phone maker grabbed the 2nd rank for the first time.
Apple slipped on third spot with 45.7 million unit shipments, just 1% year-on-year growth by securing 14% of the global smartphone market share.
However, the US tech giant’s mobile phone shipments have not increased significantly, but the substantial increase in its average selling price has led to a significant increase in revenue as the sales of iPhone 12 Pro models accounted for 37% that is much higher than the 17% of the iPhone 11.

Apart from this, Chinese phone makers such as Oppo and Vivo ranked fourth and fifth in terms of shipments during the second quarter of 2021, at the same time, both of the OEMs exceeded 30 million units.
It’s reported that the stocks of smartphone channel vendors in some regions are very low, and some vendors have also cancelled sales incentives to avoid shortage of mobile phones. However, it’s expected that this year’s global smartphone market shipments will increase by 12%.
Samsung will be expanding a selection of new One UI 7-powered Galaxy AI experiences beyond its flagship devices into the Galaxy A series and continue to bring Galaxy AI to the entire Galaxy ecosystem.
At SDC24, Sally Hyesoon Jeong announced the expansion of new Galaxy AI features to A series with One UI 7. Not all, but a selection of new Galaxy AI experiences included in the upcoming software will be shared with A series.
Galaxy A36 and A56 could be launched around March next year. New features of these phones will be expanded to select older models such as the Galaxy A35 and A55. You can expect much more to come to your phone in the first half of next year.
Recently, Samsung released the Circle to Search feature for Galaxy A35 and A55. The company will debut new Galaxy A phones next year. These devices could be equipped with even more AI-powered features as per hardware specs.
Samsung has not revealed much at the Developer Conference yesterday. The One UI 7 is still under development, with Beta will be releasing later this year. The final version will go official with the Galaxy S25 series next year.
The company is exploring a brand new UX design. The Android 15-based One UI 7 will bring a fresh new look to the entire interface. The company is also integrating AI across its portfolio to enhance customer experiences.
YouTube currently has a feature called Shorts, where users can create videos that are 60 seconds long. Starting October 15, YouTube will let users create Shorts of up to 3 minutes long. This change is a boon for creators as it gives them more time to share their ideas with more content.
Many creators have been asking for this change, and now YouTube is finally making it happen. Google mentioned that it is the top-requested feature by creators. With the 3-minute time limit, creators can include more details in Shorts.
It is worth mentioning that the new length will apply to videos that are square or taller in the aspect ratio to keep the Shorts format easy to view and engaging. Any Shorts uploaded before October 15 will remain the same and won’t be affected by this update.
Aside from this, YouTube is also changing the look of the Shorts player to make it cleaner and easier to use. The buttons will have a simple outline instead of color-filled ones and there will be a single line for descriptions.
Viewers will soon be able to see what others are saying about a video as comments will soon be visible directly in the Shorts player. YouTube will soon provide ” Show fewer Shorts ” options on the Home feed.
There’s more for creators as soon they can easily remix clips from various YouTube videos right in the Shorts camera. They’ll also be able to use templates to match trends and add their personal touch. Overall, Google hopes to make YouTube Shorts more user-friendly, easy to use, and engaging.
Samsung confirmed One UI 7 Beta coming by the end of this year for developers. We were guessing a short and limited Beta availability this year. In a shocking development, the company announced One UI 7 rollout will start next year.
We observed a major reshuffle in Samsung’s software strategy this year. The company fueled many features in the One UI 6.1 update. The One UI 6.1.1 is also a big update, which expanded in much time as compared to previous versions.
One UI 7 Beta was not announced in August, its usual release month. September was also left waiting and seemingly October will also change nothing. Samsung says, One UI 7 Beta will release for developers by the end of this year.
Previous Beta activities still had wider availability among users. However, we don’t expect the same to repeat this year with One UI 7. With “developers” the company might have meant to a limited audience for a limited period.
The Beta release is scheduled for later this year, quite close to January’s Stable debut. So, flagship Galaxy users have to be satisfied with One UI 6.1.1 features. The next big thing would arrive when you would have guessed the 7.1 release.
At SDC24, the company also teased core design elements of the One UI 7. The firmware will bring a new user experience focused on simple, impactful, and emotive design. The home screen layout will also add intuitive grid functionality for better UX.
