On August 04, famous market research firm Counterpoint Research released its latest report in the Africa smartphone market for the second quarter of 2021. The report shows smartphone sales in Africa have grown by 35% YoY but dropped by 3% QoQ in Q2 2021. This was the second-largest quarter in terms of unit sales.

Entering the MEA region, smartphone sales in the Middle East dropped slightly by 0.8% QoQ while Africa fell by 3.9% QoQ. But if you look at the YoY numbers, both regions have risen sharply, with the Middle East rising by 34% and Africa by 36%.

If we talk specifically about Samsung, the company retained its top spot, but its market share dropped by 4% to 16% in Q2 2021. The company increased market spending earlier this year, which led to better performance in Q1. However, sales declined in Q2 due to production disruptions in Vietnam following COVID-19. We expect more difficulties at the beginning of Q3.

The Transsion brand, TECNO, itel, and Infinix, almost doubled their revenue collection from 16% to 32%, as they continued to control part of the lowest prices in Africa. In terms of pricing, the rest of the Transsion market for less than $ 100 has risen to the top of the $ 100- $ 200 range. This means itel, the official in the ultra-affordable segment, lost some share to TECNO and Infinix, which make smartphones with higher specs.

Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo have also benefited greatly from efforts to enter key markets in North Africa, as well as unfortunate for Huawei and HONOR, whose market share for the quarter has dropped to 2.2% from 8.2% per annum. the past. Infinix secured the third spot with 9% of the total market share and a 190% YoY growth.

Africa, on the other hand, is currently facing the toughest wave of COVID-19 on record. Governments, however, have not yet returned to the drastic closure measures seen in 2020.

In Q3 2023, Samsung and Apple’s market share slightly declined, while an underdog Chinese phone brand appeared on the top 5 chart. In a recent development, Canalys published market research data for the third quarter, revealing Tanssion as the fifth best-seller globally.

According to the info, Samsung and Apple lead total sales with 20% and 17% market share, yet both have fallen from their 22% and 18% levels in 2022. However, Tanssion, the maker of Tecno, Itel, and Infinix phones, climbed from 6% global market share last year to 9% in 2023, a 50% jump.

Apart from this, Xiaomi matched last year’s share only by “recovering” from a terrible first half of 2023. At the same time, OPPO has fallen steadily over the past two years, while fellow BBK brand vivo lost the top-5 slot it’s owned for years.

Overall, the global smartphone market underwent a slight drop of 1% in Q3 2023. Bolstered by regional recoveries and new product upgrade demand, the smartphone market recorded a double-digit sequential growth in Q3, ahead of the sales seasons.

Recently, research agency Counterpoint Research published their latest analysis. The report reveals that Samsung continued its leadership in the third quarter of 2023, while Apple remained in the second spot. However, both OEMs faced a decline of 1 percent year over year.

According to CR, slower consumer demand is the main factor in the dwindling sales. The market did see a slight 2 percent growth in Q3 compared to Q2, likely driven by last month’s iPhone 15 series launch. Samsung secured 20 percent market share, while Apple grabbed 16 percent sales.
