Android 16 Beta 4 drops today, but Samsung’s Android 15 rollout still on hold

Google is set to release Android 16 Beta 4 in the next few hours. Pixel users will receive this update as the first big OTA after the OS reached Platform Stability. Meanwhile, Samsung has yet to resume the Android 15 rollout for Galaxy devices.
With the third Beta, Android 16 hit the Platform Stability milestone. Now, the next Beta updates won’t bring major changes that affect apps and the ecosystem. That said, the operating system is now getting the finishing touches before public release.
Google aims to release Android 16 as soon as June this year. The rollout may begin shortly after the I/O 2025 event, bringing it a quarter ahead from the past years. Samsung is confirmed to be the first beneficiary of this release timeline shift.
Android 15 was officially released on October 15, 2024. It’s been around one and a half years, yet Samsung users are waiting for the upgrade. The rollout was commenced on April 7 but was put on hold due to some serious lock screen issues.
While users are awaiting Android 15, Samsung is already working on Android 16. The next One UI update won’t bring major changes but will focus on refining the user interface with subtle tweaks and functional improvements.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 will launch with Android 16-based One UI 8. The new foldables would be the first to come pre-installed with the new OS. Android OEMs like Xiaomi and Oppo/Vivo would also follow the pursuit.

Samsung beats Apple in IDC’s Q1 2025 rankings, Counterpoint disagrees

After Counterpoint Research, we now have IDC smartphone rankings for early 2025. The report crowns Samsung as the market leader in Q1 2025, beating Apple; however, it’s just the opposite of the Counterpoint analysis.
The global smartphone shipments increased 1.5% YoY to 304.9 million units in the first quarter of 2025. More specifically, the US smartphone market experienced growth of over 5%, despite challenges from tariffs and trade wars.
IDC rankings suggest that Samsung was the smartphone king in the Q1 2025 smartphone market.
Samsung shipped the highest 60.6 million smartphones in Q1 2025. The company’s YoY shipments grew slighly by 0.6%, pushing it to 19.9% market share worldwide.
The newly launched Galaxy S25 series pushed Samsung’s sales further, which are being boosted further with the recently released Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A36 devices.
Apple was the runner up with 19% market share with 57.9 million iPhones shipped. The company has secured a massive growth jump of 10%, thanks to the iPhone 16e launch.
Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo were the third, fourth and fifth vendors, respectively. Although there’s no change in the rankings, Vivo experienced substantial growth of 6.3% year-on-year in the international market from low-end devices.
Counterpoint Research
As the the report by Counterpoint Research, Apple overtook Samsung with a narrow margin in Q1 2025 smartphone market. The former had 19% market share with 4% growth, while the latter dropped to 18% share due to 5% decline.
