Samsung LPDDR5 uMCP makes flagship features possible on mid-range phones

On June 15, 2021, Samsung announced the launch of the mass production of its latest smartphone memory solution, the LPDDR5 UFS-based multichip package (uMCP). It integrates the fastest LPDDR5 DRAM with the latest UFS 3.1 NAND flash to deliver flagship-level performance to mid-range phones.

However, Samsung’s uMCP is based on the latest mobile DRAM and NAND interfaces, that’s why it can deliver lightning-fast speed and high storage capacity at very low power.

This combination expands numerous 5G applications to more consumers that were previously available on only premium flagship models such as advanced photography, graphics-intensive gaming, and AR (augmented reality).

Samsung claims that its first uMCP’s DRAM performance has increased by nearly 50% (17 GB/s to 25GB/s), and NAND flash memory performance has doubled (1.5GB/s to 3GB/s), compared to the LPDDR4X-based UFS 2.2 solution.

Adding to this, the new uMCP also allows more space for other functions by integrating DRAM and NAND storage into a compact package chip measuring only 11.5mm x 13mm, thus maximizing the space utilization of the mobile phone.

According to Samsung, the uMCP can customize 6GB to 12GB DRAM capacity and 128GB to 512GB storage options. And the company has successfully completed LPDDR5 uMCP compatibility tests with many mobile phone manufacturers, and its uMCP-equipped devices will enter the mainstream market starting this month.

According to the info, the A17 Pro inside the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max is one of the fastest phones on AnTuTu with a combined score of 1,641,883 points. This score surpasses the Android-leading nubia Red Magic 8 Pro+ which scores 1,632,859 points.

It’s worth mentioning that the A17 Pro brings a 392,643-point CPU score and a 597,734-point outing for the GPU department. For reference, last year’s A16 Bionic chip managed a 1,474,011 score while the Apple M1 chip found on Apple laptops and iPads is just a hair away at 1,754,456 points.

Recent developments suggest that Samsung is all set to ship the Galaxy S24 series with Exynos chip in select regions. However, the latest information talks about Galaxy S24’s Exynos chip’s mass production timing and packaging technology.

According to tipster Revegnus, Samsung is planning to produce an Exynos 2400 processor on FO-WLP packaging technology. It will be the first time the company will use this process for the production of Exynos smartphone chipsets.
