Telegram surpassed 1 billion download milestone on Google Play Store

Published

Telegram 8.0.1 Update

Telegram messaging app has broken the 1 billion download barrier on the Google Play Store. Several are now looking out how the surge may have been caused by the recent Facebook server crash, slowing down apps like Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp for about six hours.

The Telegram has been growing, thanks to its easy-to-use features. For instance, Telegram allows users to run an application on multiple devices at the same time. Meanwhile, WhatsApp has promised the feature, although it will still be released.

The app has provided end-to-end encryption before WhatsApp joins this battle. Keeping this in mind, it is not surprising that the Telegram reaches higher heights. Telegram chief executive Pavel Durov says that the app had an estimated 500 million users by early 2021. He said the service had added 70 million new users due to the consequence of the Facebook outage.

Despite an increase in downloads, apps like WhatsApp currently hold over 5 billion downloads

It is fair to say that skipping 1 billion downloads does not mean that Telegram has a lot of active users. In addition, this download figure does not include users who may have passed Google Play and downloaded the Telegram apk to their devices. While this is a significant success for Telegram, rival apps like WhatsApp have more than 5 billion instances in the Google Play Store.

Recently, Instagram said it is testing a new feature that can alert users during technical issues or exits. An application wants to send notifications directly within a user activity feed.

“We will not send a notification every time there is a problem,” Instagram said.

Earlier this month, the WSJ released internal documents on Facebook starting in 2016. These documents have shown that the company is aware that its recommended recommendations fuel divisions among users. The report also cited Facebook’s Global Public Policy VP, Joel Kaplan, as opposed to the changes.
