Samsung announced most powerful 5G mmWave with 25 times faster Wi-Fi speed in subway

Published

on

On September 29, Samsung announced that it has successfully demonstrated the development of Wi-Fi in the fast-moving subway system using its 5G mmWave solution as a refuge in Seoul, Korea. Experiments have shown how the use of 5G mmWave can greatly improve Wi-Fi service in a crowded, public place.

Samsung reached 1.8Gbps Wi-Fi downlink speed using the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra on the subway. This speed is about 25 times faster than the current average speed of 71Mbps in Seoul’s subway lines. The use of Samsung’s 5G Compact Macro helped to increase the speed of Wi-Fi data by using the ultra-high power of 5G mmWave spectrum as a backhaul.

The trial took place in parts of the Seoul Metro, which included five stations in the subway that circled large areas in the city center. The improved Wi-Fi service was powered by Samsung’s 5G mmWave Compact Macro, which is mounted on the side of the track and uses 800MHz in a 28GHz spectrum band.

In addition to delivering fast Wi-Fi speeds, the wide range of mmWave bandwidth enables a unique mobile experience for Smartphones and tablets in restaurants such as stadiums and supermarkets. Cases of 5G use have increased in various business areas including public transportation, such as high-speed trains, buses, and more.

Samsung’s Compact Macro combines a baseband unit, a radio, and an antenna in a single way. This integrated and lightweight solution can be easily installed on both sides of buildings and on support poles for the rapid construction of 5G networks.

Samsung’s Compact Macro is the first 5G product to be listed in the U.S. National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) Product Compliant List (PCL) and Canada Center for Cyber Security’s Certified Product List.

Samsung pioneered the successful delivery of end-to-end infrastructure solutions including chipsets, radios, and contexts. With ongoing research and development, Samsung is leading the industry to develop 5G networks with its market-leading product from RAN and Core fully integrated into independent network solutions and AI-powered automation tools.
