Google’s Nearby Share brings group transfer support and enhanced visibility mode

Published

on

Sharing files between Android phones used to be tricky, as there was not always an easy, fast, and integrated way to transfer files wirelessly between devices. That changed last year with the launch of the imminent share, which is the core of AirDrop for Android.

The file-sharing service is featured on Google Play Services, which comes first on most Android devices and Chromebooks with Android support, so every Android user has an easy way to share files with each other.

About a year after its launch, Nearby Share will receive its most important feature update. Other users, including me, have noticed two new features in the file sharing service.

The first is group transfer support, which allows you to share one or more files with up to 4 users. Files are not transferred simultaneously to all recipients during group transfers but are instead sent to each recipient in quick succession.

This gives the sender the opportunity to confirm that they are sending files (s) to the appropriate recipient (s) and also means that the sender will not have to open a dialog box nearby for each person they want to send his file (s) to.

The second change is to tweak the Nearby Share device visibility settings. There is a new “everyone” option that will make your device visible to anyone using Nearby Share, even if they are not in your contacts list.

If you’re worried about receiving unsolicited sharing requests, you can reverse the “use everyone temporarily” switches, which automatically change the device’s visibility mode to “contacts” after a few minutes. With the exception of the new UI on Android 12, this feature has not changed since we saw it upgraded a few months ago.

These features are controlled by the server-side flag for Google Play services and do not appear to be tied to a particular version of the OS, or a few users have seen them only after the update to Android 12 Beta 5.

WhatsApp bringing new chat filtering feature for better storage management

WHatsApp Storage Chat filtering feature

WhatsApp for Android has pushed a new update with version 2.24.10.8, introducing a chat filtering feature for better storage management. This feature is currently in beta testing and available to some beta testers.

The Chat filtering feature of WhatsApp allows users to sort their chats and channels to make it easier to identify and manage storage with large files and vast chat history. With this feature, users can quickly find and delete unnecessary data, freeing up space on their devices by separating conversations.

Previously, WhatsApp had released basic chat filters such as “All”, “Unread”, and “Groups” to help users navigate their chat lists. The new update builds on this functionality to offer better organization of messages and media files.

This new feature is mainly beneficial for distinguishing between business accounts and channels that may have similar names or icons.

WhatsApp’s Chat filtering feature is expected to be made available to more beta testers soon and may be released to all users in a future update.
