Samsung regained the top spot in global smartphone shipment in Q3, 2020: Counterpoint
According to the latest data released by Counterpoint, the global smartphone shipments declined 4% YoY (Year on Year) in Q3, 2020. But the results were impressive in terms of the QoQ (Quarter on Quarter) growth, the market grew 32% and reached 366 million units in Q3, 2020.
Samsung regains the top spot in the global ranking of smartphone brands by shipment in Q3, 2020. While the Chinese smartphone maker, Huawei managed to get the second position with a 14% market share.
The South Korean tech giant retrieved the top spot in the list, with 80.4 million units of smartphones shipped and recorded a QoQ growth of 48%, and the YoY growth counts to 3%. However region-wise, Samsung had to face a decline in Asia. The company could only manage to get the fifth position in the region with only a 12% market share.

Apple, the American tech giant had to face a drop of 7% QoQ in the iPhone shipment during the quarter as the company delayed the launch of its iPhone from Q3 to Q4 this year. While the other two spots were marked by two more Chinese companies, Oppo and Vivo or we can say both of them shared the fourth spot accounting for an 8% market share each.
Smartphone shipment summary of Q3, 2020: Counterpoint
- Global smartphone market shipments declined 4% YoY but grew 32% QOQ to reach 366 million units in Q3 2020.
- India’s smartphone market surpassed the pre-Covid levels growing at 9% YoY and 188% QOQ to reach 53 million units, followed by MEA (2% YoY).
- Samsung regained the top spot, shipping 80.4 million units with 48% QOQ and 3% YoY growth with the highest-ever shipments in the last three years.
- Realme shipments grew 132% QOQ, becoming the world’s fastest brand to hit 50 million shipments since inception.
- Xiaomi grew 75% QOQ, contributing 13% in the total smartphone shipments. Notably, this was the first time when Xiaomi surpassed Apple to capture the third spot in the global smartphone market.
- Apple iPhone shipments declined 7% YoY during Q3 2020 as the company
delayed its annual iPhone launch from Q3 to Q4 in 2020.

Google should thank Samsung: Wear OS will seize 27% market in 2024
Counterpoint Research predicts Wear OS will lead 27% market share in 2024. The growth of Wear OS is highly powered by Samsung apart from Google and newcomers. Meanwhile, HarmonyOS is also growing in mainland China, expected to seize 61% market.
According to the report, Samsung, Google, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi will drive Wear OS volumes. In the global market, non-WatchOS shoppers prefer Wear OS, while HarmonyOS in China. Accordingly, the Wear OS share outside China will climb to 27% this year.
Samsung Galaxy Watch has a large share of the overall Wear OS market. Google is also expanding its footsteps in the segment, with the third iteration of Pixel Watch coming later this year. Rumor is that an affordable Pixel Watch 2a might also be introduced.

Samsung preps 2nm GAA tech for mass production
Samsung will reveal the third-gen GAA applied in the 2nm (SF2) process at the VLSI Symposium 2024 BusinessKorea reports. The company will likely commence mass production based on its next-gen (2nm) fabrication process next year.
High production costs and economic downturn benefitted TSMC in 3nm products. Apple’s latest chip is fabricated on a 3 nanometer process node, while the latest Snapdragon chips still utilize 4nm tech. Meanwhile, Samsung aims for third-gen GAA to apply in the 2nm process.
Well, Taiwan’s TSMC is also targeting GAA technology for 2nm products. Faster adoption and production are expected to push Samsung Foundry to gain clients. Competitive pricing would also benefit it bringing back consumers like Qualcomm for Snapdragon.

Samsung’s GAA is a next-gen transistor technology, which regulates and amplifies or switches off the flow of current within a semiconductor. It features a redesigned transistor architecture to overcome problems like current flow in smaller semiconductors to improve power efficiency.
