Apple seems to be preparing to unveil its first foldable device as early as 2026-2027. The company could make changes to the iPhone to mark the 20th anniversary of its premium smartphone segment and the 10th anniversary of the first OLED iPhone.
TheElec reports that Apple could bring its first foldable device to the market by 2026 or 2027. The product, featuring a display as large as 7 to 8-inch, is said to replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini model. It is also revealed that Samsung and LG Display supplied 6/7-inch foldable OLED samples to Apple last year.
Whether Apple will market it as an iPhone or iPad is yet to be finalized, the report says. As the company is also working on an OLED iPad, it could be interesting to see whether the product sees light or not. Meanwhile, a potential threat to Samsung is on the way, and it’s certainly from Apple.
Samsung is currently leading the global foldable smartphone market. The company has, so far, released five generations of foldable phones, bringing futuristic technologies like S Pen support, water resistance and an under-display camera.
Compared to Korea’s LG Display, Samsung’s display arm is said to be more active in developing Apple foldable panels. If Apple decides to mass-produce foldable product panels sized between 7 to 8 inches by 2026, Samsung Display is only capable.
Last but not least, Korean industry insiders assume that the Apple iPhone will be refreshed in the same year. To be noted, 2027 will be the 20th anniversary of the launch of Apple’s first iPhone and the 10th anniversary of the launch of the first OLED iPhone.
