Samsung 2.1D Semiconductor Packaging Technology

Samsung develops the next-gen (2.3D) semiconductor packaging technology as part of competing with its rivals – Intel and TSMC. Samsung’s 2.3D packaging technology is used to manufacture high-performance semiconductors such as AI (artificial intelligence) chips.

The Samsung 2.3D semiconductor packaging technology has reached a level of completeness that allows for mass production with customers. Moreover, the company is assessed to have established an important foothold in the AI semiconductor industry led by Intel and TSMC.

Samsung replaced the silicon interposer with a ‘silicon bridge’. This is a method (bridge) that adds silicon only to necessary areas instead of the entire semiconductor area. Specifically, a silicon bridge is inserted (embedded·E) into the redistribution layer (RDL), which is essential for packaging.

“We have developed it and are preparing for mass production with major customers. Several major companies are showing interest. We plan to have mass production infrastructure in place by next year.” – Kim Gu-young, head of the process development team at Samsung Electronics AVP.

Based on a semiconductor chip package equipped with 12 HBMs, costs can be reduced by 22% without performance degradation compared to using a silicon interposer. In the semiconductor industry, the method using bridges is called “2.3D packaging.”

Google Gemini

Google has released a major update to its Gemini AI assistant, which allows it to work with Extensions directly on the lock screen. This feature was first introduced in July 2024, when Gemini could be accessed without unlocking your phone.

Now, Gemini can do much more on the lock screen. You can ask it to play a song on YouTube Music, send a message on WhatsApp, control your Google Home smart devices, or even get directions on Google Maps, all without unlocking your phone. However, some tasks required unlocking the phone, which limited its use.

You can easily able to use Gemini’s features directly from your lock screen. To use this feature, you need to enable Gemini Extensions.

For that, open the Gemini app, go to the Extensions section, and choose the services you want to use. Then, go to Settings in the app, find Gemini on the lock screen, and turn on two options – Use Gemini without unlocking, and Make calls and send messages without unlocking.

This new feature makes it much easier to use your phone on the go. You won’t need to unlock your device just to play music, send a quick message, or control smart devices.

Google Gemini lock screen

Google has recently updated its Gemini Live to make it easier for users to pause, resume, or end chats with the AI without needing to open the app. This new update simplifies Gemini Live interaction when it’s running in the background, and it could soon be available on Samsung devices.

Previously, if you had Gemini Live running in the background, you’d only see a small icon in the status bar. To pause or continue the conversation, you would need to open the app.

Now, with the new update, when Gemini is active, you’ll see a call chip instead of the old icon. The call chip shows a live count and allows you to control your conversation directly from the notification panel. You can pause or continue the chat, or end the conversation entirely with just a tap without opening the app.

This new feature makes interacting with Gemini Live much easier, and Samsung could bring this update to its smartphones. If Google adds this Gemini Live feature to Samsung devices, Galaxy users will be able to manage their AI chats in a much simpler way, directly from the notification panel.

Right now, this update is available to a limited number of users, including those on devices like the Pixel 9 Pro with the Google app’s beta version 16.4. Soon, the company will expand it to more devices.
