Google Satellite Emergency SMS feature

Google Messages app is getting ready to introduce an important new feature for Android 14 – the Satellite Emergency SMS feature. The move recalls the useful Emergency SOS feature on iPhones, which has also helped save lives during emergencies like the Maui wildfires.

While the Emergency SOS feature is currently under development for the Messages app, this isn’t surprising considering Google’s plans to include satellite support in Android 14.

Since Google Messages is the default messaging app on many Android phones from different brands, integrating this capability is essential to avoid the need for a separate messaging app for satellite-connected phones.

In Android 14, there are hidden Satellite communication APIs that provide the necessary tools, including a “demo mode” for satellite services. This mode supports sending SOS messages and sharing location information.
