[November 25] Initial story…

On November 22nd, the Google Project Zero team discovered multiple security vulnerabilities/threats that affect various Samsung devices, specifically, Exynos chipset-powered devices with Mali GPU.

Among the discovered vulnerabilities, one can lead to kernel memory corruption. Not that all, but the other threats can leak physical memory addresses, and three others can lead to a physical page us-after-free condition.

In general, if your Samsung Exynos device is affected by any of these Mali vulnerabilities/threats, an attacker who executes native code in an app can gain full access to the system and bypass the permission model of the OS.

Google’s Project Zero team in their blog post said that these vulnerabilities can let attackers continue reading and writing physical pages after returning to the system.

Notably, Google’s Project Zero team initially discovered these flaws while investigating Pixel 6 devices. Thankfully, all the Snapdragon processor-powered Galaxy models are unaffected by these vulnerabilities.

Back in July, ARM spotted these Mali-related security flaws, however, any smartphone maker didn’t patch to address them. As Project Zero has finally discovered the issue in Android, hopefully, the patches will be coming next month.

Apart from Samsung, ARM-made Mali GPUs are also used in Xiaomi and OPPO smartphones. Hence, some of the Xiaomi and OPPO devices could also be affected by these Mali-related security flaws.

Samsung explores innovative AI summarization tech for Galaxy Z Flip 6

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

Samsung has recently disclosed a new patent on AI document summarization technology, which is expected to be applied to new products such as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The sixth-generation foldables are on their way and it seems like the devices will be equipped with cutting-edge functionalities.

Going toward more details, Samsung Electronics applied for this innovative patent on February 29 with the title ‘Electronic device for providing summary information using artificial intelligence learning model and its control method’.

This newly explored innovation or the patent is a technology that works, when a search term is entered into an electronic device, AI analyzes it, shows several related documents, identifies the user’s interests or political inclinations, and then provides a customized summary.

Furthermore, Samsung Electronics is expected to apply the technology to its self-generated AI, ‘Samsung Gauss, which is applied to the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy Book 4 series. Therefore, new AI functions are expected to be added to the Galaxy Z Flip 6 through the new version of Samsung Gauss

The sixth generation foldable devices including Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip are already tipped to come with Galaxy S24 Series-like Galaxy AI capabilities. And the inclusion of this innovative AI summarization tech will further make the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 a more advanced and refined device.

Galaxy Flip 6 AI document summarization

Last but not least, Samsung Electronics also provided an interesting example where AI can summarize articles. If a user enters an article on the topic of “Agenda for the South Korea-U.S. Summit,” and commands “summarize it shortly and neutrally,” AI would summarize keywords such as ‘North Korea, nuclear, missile, South Korea-U.S. military exercises,’ and if the command is to “summarize it long and negatively,” AI would summarize the article to say, “Disagreements between South Korea and the United States on North Korean solutions could cast a shadow on the upcoming South Korea-U.S. summit.”
