Samsung launches ultra thin glass for foldable phones [Video]

samsung ultra thin glass

At Unpacked 2022, Samsung launched a brand new Ultra Thin Glass solution for foldable smartphones. The new glass measure just one-third of the thickness of a human hair and is featured on Foldable – Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 devices to increase durability and Strength.

However, this new glass technology is more than just increased screen durability or strength for new foldable devices. Let’s take a look at its aspects.

According to Samsung, the new ultra-thin glass is made with a high-precision manufacturing process that can produce folding glass at scale.

How it’s made?

First, a special coating is applied to the glass surface based on the product’s size and shape. Second, comes the cutting process based on the product’s final measurements, while ensuring smooth edge cuts.

Then the glass is placed between two rotating rollers to smoothen up the edge cuts. This process polishes the surfaces into a sleek, balanced shape with no protrusion.

As revealed, Samsung created a special process to remove impurities from the surface to reduce the chances of the smallest scratches or cracks on the surface or near the edge. The entire scenario helps to reduce the stress level on the glass once folded.

To increase the quality and resilience of the material, the glass is reinforced via thermal and chemical treatments.

Tests:

As shown in the video, these glasses have been under a series of tough tests to ensure quality and sturdiness to get ready for consumers including extreme bending tests.

To be mentioned, the glass has been tested for folding and unfolding actions up to 200,000 times, which is amazing.

Still, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 are not the only devices to feature this technology. As the South Korean tech maker has promised to further improve the foldable ultra thin glass further in the future with advanced manufacturing.

Samsung devices Circle to search feature

Circle to Search will be getting a significant functional boost later this year. At I/O 2024, Google confirmed to upgrade Android’s Circle to Search with the ability to help you get your homework done. The service will add support for Math and Physics topics to help users.

Google teased at I/O 2024 that Circle to Search will add new features, helping students better understand potentially difficult class topics. Looking at what Google teased, the feature could show them step-by-step instructions for a “range of physics and math word problems.”

Thanks to the LearnLM AI models, Circle to Search will be capable of understanding and demonstrating symbolic formulas, diagrams, graphs, and more. When available, it will be accessible as an experimental feature which could be activated through Google Account under the Labs section.

To recall, Circle to Search was first released with Samsung’s S24 series earlier this year. Later on, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro received it through an OTA upgrade. It’s one of the star new features of Android, and although iOS users can’t yet circle their math homework for help, anything is possible.
