Qualcomm hints future Snapdragon chip will be made by Samsung, again!

Ending its multi-foundry strategy, Qualcomm is giving all the Snapdragon orders to Taiwanese TSMC since the second half of last year. Meanwhile, Qualcomm CMO hinted that Samsung foundry may join the collaboration again and start producing future Snapdragon chipsets.

According to the information (via TheElec), Qualcomm implied the possibility of collaborating with Samsung foundry again in the post-3nm process for Snapdragon chips. Next-gen Snapdragon chips (using 2nm/GAA process) may be produced by a dual system by Samsung and TSMC.

It’s reported that Qualcomm ended up using Samsung foundry due to the low yield of 4nm process and the former plans to entrust all AP production using the 3nm process to TSMC. Regarding the ‘3nm and 2nm foundry utilization plan’, Qualcomm CMO said, “We are continuing to maintain a cooperative relationship with Samsung Foundry.”

When asked if Qualcomm would maintain the multi-foundry strategy, Maguire CMO replied “yes”. “Qualcomm is too large to go with a single foundry,” he said. “The multi-foundry strategy is much easier in terms of supply, but it is also advantageous in terms of price competitiveness and scale.” “In particular, a multi-foundry strategy is more appropriate for expanding into business areas other than smartphones,” he added.

Samsung may not debut Exynos 2400+ with Galaxy S24 FE: Tipster

Rumor spreading that Samsung may debut an Exynos 2400+ chip with Galaxy S24 FE is fake. Tipster OreXDA claims that Samsung won’t bring any mid-cycle iteration of its Exynos chipset, however, improvements to power efficiency and yield are likely.

Reports surfaced claiming Samsung could bring Exynos 2400+ chip to the Galaxy S24 FE. As we didn’t see much happening in the past, the segment would continue as it has so far. Hence, no Plus, Pro, or Ultra iteration of Exynos would launch this year.

The rumor claimed that Exynos 2400+ may bring up to 10% power efficiency and yield boost. The tipster noted that the chipset may be marketed with Plus branding for promotional purposes. However, it would hurt Samsung’s chip distribution strategy.

If this happens, Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus users would think robbed. We’ve seen such happening with the Galaxy S22 and S23 FE flagships. While the former debuted the Exynos 2200 chip, the latter was equipped with its enhanced variant paired with a larger cooling chamber.

Samsung won’t fade its reputation just for silly marketing purposes. The Exynos 2400 is a tough competitor to its Qualcomm counterpart, which we haven’t seen in previous generations. Samsung’s enhanced process and yield would benefit it before the S24 FE arrival.

Exynos 2400 used in S24 and S24 Plus features a 10-core architecture. It’s fabricated on Samsung’s 4-nanometer process technology and has 1 core Cortex-X4 at 3210 MHz, 2 cores Cortex-A720 at 2900 MHz, 3 cores Cortex-A720 at 2600 MHz, and 4 cores Cortex-A520 at 1950 MHz.

Samsung and Synopsys team up for 3nm AI mobile chip

Samsung and Synopsys announced their collaboration for 3nm AI-powered mobile chip. Both companies announced they had accomplished the production tapeout for a Samsung high-performance mobile SoC design.

According to AnandTech, future Samsung mobile SoCs could get flagship CPU and GPU, with 300MHz higher performance using Synopsys.ai full stack AI-driven EDA suite.

The report also hints a broad portfolio of Synopsys IP on Samsung Foundry’s latest 3nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process technologies will further empower the company’s mobile AI processor portfolio.

The combination of Synopsys.ai EDA suite, Synopsys Fusion Compiler RTL-to-GDSII solution for PPA, and Synopsys DSO.ai was critical to achieving these goals, reports embeddedcomputing.

“Our longstanding collaboration has delivered leading-edge SoC designs. This is a remarkable milestone to successfully achieve the highest performance, power and area on the most advanced mobile CPU cores and SoC designs in collaboration with Synopsys,” said Kijoon Hong, vice president of SLSI at Samsung Electronics.

“Not only have we demonstrated that AI-driven solutions can help us achieve PPA targets for even the most advanced GAA process technologies, but through our partnership we have established an ultra-high-productivity design system that is consistently delivering impressive results,” Kijoon Hong added.
