A new LPDDR6 DRAM rival is emerging for Samsung and SK Hynix

CXMT is closing in on LPDDR6 DRAM (memory semiconductor), and the aggressive timeline is starting to look uncomfortable for Samsung and SK Hynix.

SK Hynix is still out front, having confirmed development validation for the world’s first 16Gb LPDDR6 chip on its sixth-gen 10nm process, with mass production targeted for later this year.

Samsung and Micron have pulled back on LPDDR6 investment, redirecting capacity toward HBM and server DRAM instead, and that’s exactly the opening CXMT needs.

CXMT, the Chinese memory maker, has reportedly wrapped up most of its LPDDR6 DRAM development validation work. With validation almost complete, CXMT is now past the halfway mark toward commercial LPDDR6 chips.

For context, LPDDR rollouts typically move through four stages: single-die verification, development validation, small-batch qualification, and mass production.

The company’s first LPDDR6 part is built for a 12,800 Mbps data rate, 16Gb die density, and 16GB chip capacity in a 1295-ball POP package.

CXMT shipped LPDDR5 with 12Gb dies back in late 2023, then followed up in 2025 with LPDDR5X hitting 10,667 Mbps, a 66 percent speed bump over LPDDR5 with 30 percent lower power draw.

CXMT’s global DRAM share sits around 7.67 percent by Omdia’s count, though Nomura pegs it closer to 10 percent, with projections of 18 percent by 2028.

Its chips are already inside Xiaomi, Transsion, Honor, OPPO, and vivo devices, and Apple has reportedly begun testing CXMT memory for China-market products.
