Why Galaxy S27 should adopt Sony camera

Sony’s imaging sensors have a well-earned reputation, and they already power some of the most respected camera phones on the market. If Samsung genuinely brings that expertise into the S27’s main camera, it’s an admission that the ISOCELL approach needed outside help.

Samsung has leaned on in-house ISOCELL sensors for its main cameras for years now, and while they’ve gotten the job done, “gotten the job done” isn’t exactly a compliment when you’re competing with the Apple iPhone.

According to a recent report from GalaxyClub, Samsung is currently testing device variants of the standard Galaxy S27 and S27+ featuring a 50-megapixel Sony main camera sensor.

If this holds true through development, it would mark the first time in years that Samsung drops its in-house ISOCELL primary sensor on base S-series models in favor of Sony hardware.

While the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra are reportedly getting a proper 50 MP ultrawide upgrade, the base S27 and S27+ look set to stick with a modest 12 MP ultrawide sensor.

A main camera powered by Sony’s advanced sensor technology would compensate for compromises elsewhere, ensuring that everyday shots deliver flagship-grade clarity and color accuracy.

Sony sensor in the Galaxy S27 main camera would be a meaningful shift, especially at a time when pricing across Samsung’s lineup keeps climbing.

We’re still early in the Galaxy S27’s development cycle, and a lot can change between now and launch. Take this one with the usual grain of salt for now, but if it’s true, it’s a step in the right direction.

Samsung officially confirmed the extension of Wear OS upgrades for the Galaxy Watch. Starting with the latest smartwatch models, the company will offer up to five years of major OS upgrades, feature drops, and security patches.

Samsung’s latest move formally deploys with the launch of the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. It’s an extension of one year, bringing the complete Wear OS software support tenure from four years to five years.

Galaxy Watch 9 and Ultra 2 are confirmed to get new software updates until July 2031. It’s complete 5-year support from the launch window. Future launches would also be eligible for Samsung’s new update policy.

Wear OS support officially extended

The Korean tech giant had maintained a 4-year software support policy for its Wear OS-powered smartwatch models. Even though the lifespan was 4 years, the company went beyond that to offer even more software updates.

What’s changing this summer is the official deployment of the software strategy.

Galaxy Watch 4, for example, received One UI 8 Watch even after completing its software support lifecycle. The Galaxy Watch 5 series is in the same state this year, and it is set to receive the One UI 9 Watch upgrade as testing begins.

That said, the 5-year policy was already in effect; Samsung has just made it official this July.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Samsung wearables are developing a line on display after their final major upgrade. Users of the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Fit3 reported the problem, and Samsung has yet to respond.

After years of foldables running on the same tired lithium-ion cells, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 have officially made the jump to silicon-carbon battery technology, which Samsung might take to the Galaxy S27 series next year.

While Chinese rivals were busy stuffing silicon-carbon cells into their phones and flaunting massive capacities, Samsung stuck to the same old formula and called it “efficiency.” Well, the story changed with the Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8 lineup.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra now packs a 5,000mAh silicon carbon battery, the Z Fold 8 gets 4,800mAh, and the Z Flip 8 comes in at 4,300mAh. None of these numbers are going to blow minds on a spec sheet, but that’s not really the point.

The real story is what silicon carbon lets the South Korean tech giant do without making these phones thicker or heavier. More energy density packed into the same, or even smaller, footprint; that’s the win here.

Samsung has now proven, on shipping retail devices, that it trusts silicon carbon enough to put it inside its most premium foldables. Does that mean the Galaxy S27 series gets the same treatment next year?

Well, Samsung is famously, almost stubbornly, cautious with battery decisions ever since the Note 7 disaster.

So even with silicon carbon now proven on foldables, is it safe to assume the S27 gets it too, or is the company is going to sit back for another cycle and watch how the Z Fold 8 series performs in the wild first?

Rumors have been swirling for months about Samsung SDI testing dual-cell silicon carbon batteries specifically earmarked for the Galaxy S27 Ultra, with numbers ranging around 5200mAh, but none of that was ever confirmed.

For now, nothing is confirmed on the S27 front. But with silicon carbon officially out of the lab and into people’s pockets, the possibility just got a whole lot more real.
