The new Galaxy Z Fold 8 foldable form factor appears to be finding more buyers than Samsung initially expected, and that success is now creating a problem further up the display chip supply chain.

Korean outlet ZDNet reports that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is reportedly facing a shortage of its Display Driver IC (DDI), the specialized chip responsible for controlling pixels on the phone’s OLED display.

The South Korean tech giant is said to have increased component orders as demand for the passport-style foldable outpaces its original projections, but ramping up DDI production is proving difficult.

Samsung’s System LSI division designs the Galaxy Z Fold 8 display chip, while Taiwan-based United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) manufactures it using a 22nm process.

The problem is that UMC’s capacity on this node is already heavily utilized. Samsung has reportedly asked UMC to prioritize production through its highest-priority manufacturing process, known as a Super Hot Run.

Samsung is reportedly looking to bridge the gap by redirecting some DDI inventory originally reserved for future product development toward current Z Fold 8 production.

If demand continues at the current pace, Samsung may need to carefully manage its existing display chip inventory until additional foundry capacity becomes available.

Samsung’s screen patch appears to have failed in addressing the red tint issue on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, and the second wave of reports highlights an even worse situation, such as the display developing dots.

It seems Samsung’s attempt to fix the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s controversial red tint display problem appears to have created another layer of concern for some owners.

Earlier this week, the company began rolling out an August 2026 software update that includes the long-awaited correction for the red discoloration issue.
