Samsung Electronics is fighting for chip supremacy against TSMC, a Taiwan-based semiconductor company, and in between that, South Korean tech has taken an important step in its 2nm foundry business and received orders from Qualcomm to develop a 2-nano AP.

As per the details, Qualcomm has ordered Samsung Electronics to develop a 2-nano AP prototype. While TSMC is also expected to produce prototypes, as Qualcomm is known to have requested the production of 2-nano prototypes from TSMC in addition to Samsung.

To be mentioned, Samsung and TSMC have focused their attention on 2-nano as the next-generation foundry technology and are aiming to mass produce 2-nano semiconductors in 2025, to win a large number of orders from Qualcomm, one of the industry’s largest customers.

Following the recent order, Samsung Electronics has decided to produce a prototype of Qualcomm’s top AP using the 2-nano process. This 2nm is a process that Qualcomm is attempting for the first time, so there is great uncertainty about performance and yield.

After letting Samsung and TSMC put their best efforts into developing the 2nm process, Qualcomm will further select one company for mass production based on the results.

However, the selection of the final mass production of the company that will receive Qualcomm’s 2-nano AP order is expected to be concluded within the year, because, the prototype development usually takes six months to a year.
