Impressed by Samsung, EU wants 3 OS and five years of security updates for all phones

The regulators of the European Union want to enforce all smartphone makers to provide at least three years of OS and five years of regular security updates. Furthermore, the officials want OEMs should deliver the latest security and OS updates “at the latest two months after the public release.”
This move is going to become a big concern for manufacturers having nothing when it comes to software update support from China. Samsung, at the same time, can feel secure here as it already provides up to 5 years of security and at least 3 years of major OS updates.
If the proposal becomes law, Samsung will be required to alter its software policy too, which currently assures at least 2 OS upgrades for all phones and 4 years of security patches. Well, it’s not a big task for Samsung as it’s already keeping the best support provider crown in the industry.
Aside from Samsung, Google and Apple also provide similar treatment to their smart devices. Following the proposal, the EU wants to force vendors to offer longer software update support for not only flagships but also for less-premium and budget phones.
Moreover, the EU’s new draft of regulations also mentions that the battery capacity of a device “shall not deteriorate after an operating system software update or a firmware update when measured with the same test standard originally used for the declaration of conformity.”
Aside from this, the union is on its way to adopting a single charger strategy for all phones sold in Europe. The recently passed bill enforce phone makers to install a USB Type-C charging port in all mobile devices, which will come to effect by 2024.
EU is currently collecting feedback on the draft of the proposed rules.
