Samsung patents dual-UDC smartphone for secure facial recognition

Samsung dual-UDC smartphone

Last year, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 3 smartphone featuring its first Under Display Camera technology. Now it seems like a single UDC is not enough for Samsung as it is working on Dual-UDC technology for future Galaxy smartphones.

The company filed a new patent at KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) that describes the new dual-UDC technology in March 2021 while Dutch publication GalaxyClub spotted that it was published last week.

According to the patent description, Samsung dual-UDC technology uses two hidden cameras to scan your face from two different angles at the same time. This approach will reportedly make facial recognition on smartphones more secure and accurate because in doing so your face is captured more deeply.

In addition to this, the patent documentation also mentions that the dual-UDC setup would be capable of measuring the user’s eye pupils for improved biometric security. Since our pupils change size depending on the light, Samsung will use this as a verification tool.

The new technology will change the screen brightness to determine the reaction of pupils so that other people can not unlock your phone through your picture, providing customers with a more secure facial unlock.

Samsung Dual-UDC coming to future smartphones:

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the first Samsung phone to introduce under-display camera technology. The company also brought UDC to Galaxy Z Fold 4 and now the comply is also planning to expand it to Galaxy S series phones.

The Korean tech will launch Galaxy S23 series phones in early 2023 but these devices will unlikely equip such a UDC system. However, it’s possible that the 2024’s Galaxy S24, at least the Galaxy S24 Ultra will come with UDC technology.

On the other hand, the dual-UDC is far away to reach the devices. Currently, there’s no telling if Samsung is actively working on it or has patented the technology for possible future use.

Concept shows Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in sizzling ‘Graygreen’ inspired by Fold 4

Published

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Graygreen

Samsung imagined a new color combination of Gray + Green and introduced it with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 foldable smartphone last month. It’s expected that Samsung might expand the ‘Graygreen’ color to more of its upcoming flagships such as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is shown in this concept by HoiINDI.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra just passed China’s mandatory certification with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor and downgraded 25W fast charging support. The color variants for this upcoming flagship remain a mystery so far, but, we can have an idea of what the Galaxy S23 Ultra would look like in the Graygreen colorway.

The concept creator managed to paint the Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone in Graygreen colorway, which first debuted with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 foldable. Neither fairly Gray nor Green, Samsung’s combined color shade is sizzling and beautiful on the Fold 4, which could arrive with the S23 Ultra as well.

As per the rumors, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s middle frame would be slightly thicker, making the display have reduced curve edges. This move could help Samsung radically increase the peak brightness of the panel as the iPhone 14 Pro is already here with a striking peak brightness panel of 2000 nits.

On the rear side, the Galaxy S23 Ultra carries its predecessor-like camera arrangement, continuing to exclude a dedicated module or island. The biggest change here is the primary camera sensor, which now has a 200MP resolution and could be named ISOCELL HP2.

The left side remains vacant, while the volume adjustment buttons are placed on the right side alongside the power button. The bottom of the handset contains a primary microphone, USB C Type port for charging, and a speaker grille, while, there is another mic on the top of the phone.

Editor’s Pick

Samsung could launch the Galaxy S23 series flagships sometime in February 2023 with Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra models. As reported earlier, the upcoming lineup may be equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor for every country, without any Exynos model.

Apple introduced the new iPhone 14 series this month. Meanwhile, Samsung is at threat as these smartphones, especially the iPhone 14 Pro, are seeing strong sales, which could help Apple grab 60% flagship smartphone market.

According to a new information by DigiTimes, Apple’s market share for high-end phones, priced above $500, has increased to 55% in the off-season and 60% in the peak season this year. Furthermore, Apple also wants to stay on top and in doing so it has asked Foxconn, its primary iPhone assembler, to shift some iPhone 14 production capacity to Pro models to meet strong demand. But reportedly, the makers in Apple’s supply chain haven’t received order cuts for any models.

On the official website, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are estimated to ship in weeks in multiple configurations. In comparison, the base model – iPhone 14 sales are slightly low. The devices are available to order from Apple’s website as well as in stores.

Moving ahead, Apple iPhone 13 Pro models were said to have recorded outstanding long-tail sales after the first wave of pre-orders last year. Apple iPhone’s Pro models have become a mainstream upgrade for iPhone fans and that’s because of significant specs upgrade.

Samsung abandons Fold 4, Flip 4 sales ambitions:

Ahead of Apple, Samsung also introduced its new flagship smartphones – Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. The smartphones arrived with lots of improvements over their predecessor while maintaining a similar price range.

Still, the new Galaxy smartphones didn’t live up to Samsung’s expectations to reach around 15 million unit sales by the end of this, year. The company has reportedly left its ambitions and cut Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z  Flip 4 shipments target to 8 million only.
