Samsung Electro-Mechanics develops 2 MLCCs for autonomous driving vehicles
Samsung Electro-Mechanics, a subsidiary of Samsung components, said that they had launched two key multi-layer ceramic capacitors for autonomous driving systems.
One is smaller than any of the MLCC currently available for advanced driver assistance programs, or ADAS, measuring 0.6 millimeters in length and 0.3 mm across, as the company said. One has 47 microfarad storage.
The company expects the new products to be widely used in self-driving cars in the future. The smallest MLCC, called 0603 MLCC, is reduced by 64 percent by its previous size but retains the same final volume of 100 microfarads.

It will be used by the electronic control unit in private driving vehicles, which removes noise to deliver signals more accurately to drivers.
“Demand for smaller, larger storage and highly trusted MLCCs is rapidly growing as cars go electrified,” said Kim Doo-young, head of component business at Samsung Electro-Mechanics. “The company will continue developments and manufacturing of proprietary materials to expand its share in the automotive MLCC market.”
Samsung Electro-Mechanics doubled the size of the product compared to existing MLCCs to prevent partial injuries from external shocks and vibrations during driving. Product durability and quality are key factors in automotive MLCCs, added by Samsung Group.
The 47uF MLCC, which is 3.2 mm long and 1.6 mm wide, will take into account the stable power supply inside the vehicles. Samsung has doubled its storage volume in current products.
Increasing storage is important for MLCCs in private vehicles as ADAS is changing with the transfer and processing of large amounts of data. The firm said it was successful in further reducing the size of ceramic capacity, which is important for MLCCs, to protect storage.

The Korean tech giant recently announced the successful development of oxide-based ultra-small all-solid-state batteries. Samsung has also supplied prototypes to key customers for evaluation before commercializing into consumer products.
Notably, Samsung is the world’s first firm that has achieved the milestone of developing ultra-small all-solid-state batteries. As mass production is expected in 2026, we assume the Galaxy Watch 9 series could boast new all-solid-state batteries.
All-solid-state batteries are cells, which replace liquid electrolytes with non-flammable solids. Samsung is pushing for applications in wearable devices that closely adhere to the body, such as smartwatches and earbuds.

Samsung rolls out October 2024 update to Galaxy Z Fold 6, Flip 6
Samsung has pushed the October 2024 security update for its Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 devices. The update is initially available for these devices’ users in Europe and the US, with plans to expand to other regions soon.
The new update enhances system security and stability by addressing various issues to improve overall device performance. The latest security patch includes critical updates from both Google and Samsung.
Notably, Google’s patch resolves 2 critical vulnerabilities and 28 high-level issues, although one of these issues was previously addressed, and two do not apply to Galaxy devices.

To manually check for updates, users can navigate to their phone’s Settings, scroll to the Software Update section, and select the “Download and Install” option if a new OTA is available.
Both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 come pre-installed with Android 14 based on One UI 6.1.1. These foldable devices are set to receive the next major One UI update, expected to be available to developers by year’s end.
A community moderator revealed that a One UI 7 Beta program will soon be accessible to regular Galaxy users. However, details regarding eligible devices and schedules are yet to be confirmed.
