Galaxy S22 series is ready for the last software overhaul

Published

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Next week will be crucial for the Galaxy S22 series, as it is ready to conclude the major upgrade cycle with one last software overhaul.

Launched in February 2022, Samsung unpacked the Galaxy S22 series with an AMOLED 2X display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, up to 5,000 mAh battery, and a 108MP camera system. The S-Pen, which died with the Note series, made an official return with a top-tier variant.

The phone was introduced with Android 12-based One UI 4.1. In the following years, it has received Android 13, 14, 15, and 16. However, that’s where the line is drawn. The phone is eligible for only four OS upgrades. It means the Galaxy S22 series will no longer receive major updates.

With Android 16 as its last Android version, the Galaxy S22 lineup will continue to receive security updates through 2026. That’s not it; these phones have a shot at One UI 8.5, which will bring far better software improvements over its predecessor.

It has a customizable quick panel and new AI feature improvements. improved UI elements. New photo assist options and much more. So, One UI 8.5 could be the perfect send-off to the Galaxy S22 series before it goes solo to the security update support.

Rollout Date?

Samsung hasn’t announced any official date for rollout, but the phone has started receiving the May 2026 security update. This might be a sign that the final software overhaul is on the way.

On top of that, a recent report suggests that the One UI 8.5 for the Galaxy S22 series could be released as early as next week. As usual, it will first be released in Korea, and expansion may take a few days to reach global users.

Apple sees future in AI glasses, moving away from XR headset

Samsung Google XR Glasses

Samsung is bringing its AI-powered Intelligent Eyewear (Smart Glasses) this year, and Apple may have finally decided to join the trend. A new industry report sheds light on major shifts happening behind-the-scenes within the supply chain.

TheElec report suggests Apple may now see a future in AI-powered Smart Glasses, rather than an XR headset. The company has reportedly postponed its affordable XR headset project and is reportedly focusing on smart glasses.

Samsung Display, which had been working with Apple on XR headset’s display panels, has reportedly terminated the project. It involved the development of Micro-OLEDs based on glass substrates.

The US tech giant had reportedly planned to bring an affordable XR headset by the year 2028. However, the development of the device’s core component has been dumped, indicating

Although mass production was initially projected for 2028 or later, the development project itself has recently been completely scrapped.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display is continuing its research capabilities on developing OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) for Samsung’s XR devices and next-generation RGB OLEDoS.

Samsung Display has recently unveiled key related technologies at global exhibitions. Notably, at AWE USA 2026, the company showcased a 1.3-inch, 40,000-nit RGB OLEDoS and a smart glass demo featuring a 0.62-inch RGB OLEDoS.

Apple Foldable iPhone

LG Display has spent years preparing for Apple’s foldable device roadmap, and new developments suggest those efforts are extending across the wider LG group. While Samsung Display is expected to supply displays for Apple’s first foldable iPhone, LG Display is positioning itself for future opportunities as Apple’s foldable lineup expands.

LG Innotek has filed 30 patents related to foldable display backplates since 2019, and industry sources point to Apple’s future foldable IT products. The company appears determined to secure a larger role in Apple’s next generation of foldable devices.

LG is eager to supply Apple’s foldable iPhone display

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (via ZDNet), LG Innotek has filed 30 patent applications related to “elastic members” since 2019.

In foldable displays, the elastic member is essentially the backplate, a critical support layer positioned between the OLED panel and the hinge. Its job is to absorb and distribute stress generated every time the device is folded and unfolded.

An industry source claimed LG Innotek is developing these backplates with Apple’s future foldable IT products in mind. Developments are in line with LG Display CEO Jeong Cheol-dong’s statement to target the foldable OLED market.

Apple may have been encouraging LG Display for the foldable OLED. Samsung Display is the biggest OLED manufacturer, but the US tech giant doesn’t usually rely on a single component vendor for such crucial products.

LG Display already supplies flagship OLED panels for top-tier iPhones. Apple has split the supply between the two Korean vendors. BOE, on the other hand, usually wins OLED supply orders for non-Pro iPhone models.

Samsung PM1763 SSD AI

Samsung begins the mass production of its PCIe 6.0-based PM1763 SSD for AI servers. The new storage solution introduces faster speeds and better efficiency for next-generation AI and HPC server environments.

The new Samsung PM1763 SSD will serve as a key storage solution for high-performance AI platforms. The product incorporates Samsung’s 9th-generation V-NAND and a newly developed 4-nanometer (nm) controller.

Samsung says its PM1763 is available in 4TB, 8TB and 16TB capacities. Notably, the 16TB configuration delivers industry-leading performance with sequential read and write speeds of up to 28,400MB/s and 21,900MB/s, respectively.

This level of performance allows the transfer of a 40GB large language model in approximately 1.4 seconds, helping minimize data latency between processors and accelerators while improving overall AI processing efficiency.

Samsung’s new PM1763 SSD is optimized for liquid-cooled server environments through direct-to-chip (D2C) cooling technology. Power efficiency is also improved by more than 1.8 times compared to its predecessor.

As the volume of data required for AI training and inference continues to grow rapidly, enterprise SSDs (eSSDs) capable of delivering data quickly and reliably are becoming increasingly essential to AI infrastructure.

TM Roh unveils 5 pillars shaping the future of Galaxy AI

Samsung TM Roh op-ed Galaxy Unpacked

Samsung Mobile Chief TM Roh published a 700-word op-ed in the official newsroom, unveiling the foldable manifesto and five pillars shaping the future of Galaxy AI.

Ahead of Galaxy Unpacked, TM Roh outlined its long-term vision centered on personal devices, connected experiences, openness, security through Knox, and new Galaxy AI-powered form factors designed to deliver contextual assistance.

Samsung’s TM Roh draws a line from electricity to the internet to smartphones, arguing that none of those technologies mattered until they reached ordinary hands through a switch, a browser, or an app store.

AI, he suggests, is at that same inflection point, shifting from a tool that answers questions to an agent that takes action on a person’s behalf. The catch is that acting for someone requires actually knowing them first.

Samsung TM Roh op-ed Galaxy Unpacked

Samsung said smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, TVs, home appliances, foldables, and even future wearable devices collectively create a richer understanding of each user.

Roh leans hard on Knox, positioning it not just as device-level security but as protection for the connections between devices.

The foldables mention is brief but telling. Roh ties screen flexibility directly to AI capability, arguing that as AI handles more simultaneously, a display that can expand or fold becomes functionally necessary rather than a gimmick.

None of this confirms specifics for the next Unpacked: no chip names, no camera specs. But it does suggest Samsung wants the narrative to be ecosystem and trust rather than a spec sheet.

Samsung will present the next phase of this vision at Galaxy Unpacked, where it is expected to demonstrate how Galaxy AI, connected devices, and its partner ecosystem come together.
