One UI 8.5: Welcome the new floating tab bar
One UI 8.5 comes with a floating tab bar UI across the software, something you won’t find on One UI 8. However, there’s more to know about this graphical change that reflects on the ease of access.
To understand the present, we must dive into the past, and that’s One UI 8. With this software, Samsung has been following the core Android design language of the tab bar, an essential UI element for organizing content at the bottom to switch between different pages.
The layout provides improved visibility for on-screen options and makes them easy to interact with tab switching icons.
Often seen in popular apps such as Gallery, these tabs are placed at the bottom with features such as categories and settings. One UI 8 and prior versions had this tab bar for years. However, One UI 8.5 has changed this approach with a new language.
Floating Tab Bar
The new software removes the traditional plain tab bar with a new floating tab UI. The setup consists of a pill-shaped background with a frosted color scheme. On top of that, the icons and text schemes for options are retained from the One UI 8. The thing that changed is the selection highlighter, which does a better job than its predecessor, improving the aesthetics.
This floating tab bar is placed at the bottom with margins from the bottom left and right, with a sort of hovering effect, appearing on top of the content, unlike acting as a boundry in the bottom. This tab bar is shared across key apps such as Gallery, Phone, Clock, and Reminders, but not limited to.
Reachability
Another major improvement in the new design is the reachability, which makes a practical change by putting options within the range of a thumb.
One issue
Despite UI improvements, there’s one issue that I can’t ignore, and it’s the rigid animations. I’ve been using iOS 26 for months, and its version of the floating tab bar is way smoother in terms of switching and selection compared to One UI 8.5.
Conclusion
This is a welcoming move from the phone maker and contributes to a cleaner UI experience, but some improvements are required to make it look competitive against the best that iOS is offering.

Samsung now making One UI 9.5 Beta; Galaxy S26 leading the rollout list
Samsung is now preparing its flagship Galaxy S26 series for the One UI 9.5 Beta Program. Weeks after internal testing, the upcoming software has just surfaced with a public beta identity on Samsung’s firmware test server.
Galaxy S26 series debuted with Android 16-based One UI 8.5 earlier this year. Later, Samsung rolled out One UI 9.0 through Android 17. Now, the flagship phones are being prepared for yet another major One UI upgrade.
Galaxy S26 One UI 9.5 Beta in the making
One UI 9.5 Beta has begun internal testing on the Galaxy S26 series. Samsung hasn’t opened Beta sign-ups for Galaxy smartphone owners, but the internal phase is itself a major milestone. Thanks for the tip, Kailash!
The next One UI version is also built on Android 17, but Galaxy users can expect a QPR2 build, which Pixel phones are slated to get in December 2026. However, there’s no official information regarding the 9.5 version of One UI.

How do we determine a Beta software?
Galaxy S26 Ultra’s latest test build is S948NKSU6ZZK3, which ends with ZZK3. The placement of Z in the fourth-to-last spot confirms that it is a Beta firmware in nature, which will surely be provided to owners of retail units.
We expect One UI 9.5 Beta Program to kick off later this year. A more specific timeline (expected) should be mid-December. Samsung can bring it early or delay it to late December, or even January, depending on internal testing.
The official release is set to happen with the Galaxy S27 series next year. The new flagship phones could launch in January or February 2027. Official rollout of the firmware could be kicked off around the second quarter of the year.

Samsung tablet owners vent over slow One UI 9.0 rollout
We are on the verge of November, a major month to watch for Samsung updates. The coming weeks will lay the foundation for the start of the One UI 9.5 Beta Program and potentially the conclusion of the One UI 9.0 stable rollout. Meanwhile, Samsung Galaxy Tab series tablet owners vent over the slow One UI 9.0 rollout.
Samsung has plenty of tablets under its Galaxy Tab umbrella. The company launches tablets in two major tiers, including the Galaxy Tab S and Galaxy Tab A. Sub-brands also fall under these segments, such as “Lite” and “FE.” For enterprises, the Korean tech giant makes specific rugged tablets under its Galaxy Tab Active lineup.
Premium Galaxy tablets are guaranteed for up to seven years of OS upgrades, similar to what Samsung offers on its flagship Galaxy S phones and Galaxy Z foldables.
Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy tablets are lagging in the One UI 9.0 rollout. The stable update, which began releasing to the Galaxy S26 series in mid-September, has only reached one premium tablet lineup at the end of October.
On October 29, Samsung started the One UI 9.0 rollout to the Galaxy Tab S11 series tablets. The update has only landed in South Korea, with Global reach in waiting.

Galaxy Tab S11 series is one of the first contenders for the major upgrade. That line getting sidelined by more than a month raises questions about the update expansion mechanism.
Think about the Galaxy Tab S10 series and other eligible models. Other variants would follow the Global expansion to the Galaxy Tab S11 tablets. It could take from two weeks to a month to complete the expansion worldwide.
Apart from major updates, Samsung is also having double standards when it comes to OS upgrades. Its premium tablets receive security updates once a quarter. Meanwhile, select Galaxy A phones are listed on the monthly updates chart.
