Samsung has just dropped the May 2023 security update for my Galaxy S22 Ultra. Its other siblings (S22 and S22 Plus) should have also received the same treatment.

Notably, the Galaxy S22 series was among the first to get the May 2023 update, but Samsung made me wait for over two weeks to get it in India. Well, Iā€™m really and eagerly waiting to hear something about the Android 14 upgrade by Samsung as testing already begins for S23 series internally.

This May 2023 security patch is necessary to install as Samsung revealed earlier this month that it includes 58 CVE and 21 SVE items. Overall, the package becomes a big deal in order to safeguard my Galaxy S22 Ultra including system, native functions, and personal data.

For your info, the firmware weighs 340 megabytes, making it a brainer to think about connection loss or metered data. It took my phone to download the package less than a minute, while installation steps lead the phone to around a 5-minute downtime, followed by a laggy experience for a while.

Well, my phone is now working fine and Iā€™m going to find out if thereā€™s anything new added under the hood. Samsungā€™s changelog hasnā€™t specified anything other than ā€œThe security of your device has been improvedā€ however, the firmware build number also indicates just security improvements.

As always, the transitions and animations have gotten smoother, thanks to Samsung for refining One UI 5.1 with incremental updates. However, itā€™s hard to see non-Galaxy users such as Pixel, OnePlus 11, and Xiaomi 13 rocking with the development build of Android 14.

Have you received the May update on your Galaxy S22 Ultra or the S22 / S22 Plus?
