The craze of the iPhone 14 series didn’t last too long as Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra became the new talk of the town. Apple surrendered its global smartphone market dominance (temporary) to Samsung in Q1, 2023, Canalys market research shows.

Q1 2023 Smartphone Market

Canalys report shows that the global smartphone market faced fell by 12% year-on-year in Q1, 2023, the fifth QoQ decline in a row. While the market showed signs of recovery, it would take longer than usual to make things better, like before the global economic downturn.

Amid global decline, the South Korean phone maker was the only leading vendor to achieve a quarter-on-quarter recovery. As believed by Galaxy fans, Samsung dethroned Apple and snatched its global smartphone market crown in the Q1, 2023 period.

“The inventory of the smartphone industry, irrespective of channel or vendor, can reach a relatively healthy level by the end of the second quarter of 2023,” Canalys predicts.

Surrender of Apple

2020’s Q4 brought a lot of happiness for Apple as massive iPhone 14 sales lead it to surpass Samsung. However, the Galaxy S23 series, especially the S23 Ultra, lessened iPhone 14 Pro’s, thanks to pro-grade technology, a 200-megapixel camera, and limitless possibilities of the Android ecosystem.

Apple declined to second with a 21% market share, narrowing the gap between itself and Samsung, courtesy of solid demand for the iPhone 14 Pro series in Q1 2023. However, Samsung became the market leader once again, leaving Apple in the dust, grabbing a sizzling 22% market share.

Compared to the same duration last year, Samsung’s smartphone market declined by 2%, from 24% to 22%. At the same time, Apple recorded a growth of 3%, from 18% to 21%, which signals at increasing competition and spreading reach of iPhones.
