Including South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, technology companies and automakers have been asked to make efforts to expose their US-provided chains during a meeting hosted by the US Secretary of Commerce.

According to the report, Samsung was among a list of companies including TSMC, Intel, Apple, Microsoft, and other automakers, who are overseeing the conference.

The companies were asked to submit documents detailing their supply chains in the US over the next 45 days. The information requested by the US government includes chip repositories, orders, and sales records, Bloomberg report.

The goal is to “understand and quantify where bottlenecks may exist,” the White House said in a statement after the meeting.

The main purpose of the conference seems to be to help reduce the ongoing chip shortages in the US automotive industry. The industry officials based in Seoul expressed concern over the risks associated with the sensitivity of the information requested by the US government.

“It is unprecedented that a government demands such sensitive information considered as trade secrets,” said an industry official. “The demand would be a significant burden on those companies.”

Some raised questions about the purpose of the meeting, saying that the program does not need to be used in technology companies that are not closely related to the automotive sector. Samsung reportedly did not announce its immediate plan to build a $ 17 billion US facility during the conference.
