Years of Galaxy Z Fold design evolution lead into Apple’s foldable era
The foldable iPhone era kicks off after Samsung unveiled eight generations of Galaxy Z Fold models. Apple’s set to unveil its first foldable product at the Apple Event today, as Samsung highlights the Galaxy Z Fold design evolution over the years.
Way back in 2019, Samsung launched its first foldable phone, called Galaxy Fold. The smartphone was very thick and heavy, weighing 276 grams. In 2026, Samsung has reduced the weight to merely 201 grams through technological innovations.

From the first Galaxy Fold in 2019 to the latest Galaxy Z Fold 8 in 2026, Samsung’s foldable lineup introduced practical improvements in terms of hinge and display design, durability, and usability.
Samsung published a Galaxy Z Fold-specific article on its official Newsroom highlighting how it worked on making a large-screen foldable easier to carry every day, without losing the experience.
And through that pursuit, Galaxy Z Fold 5 weighed 253 grams, and Galaxy Z Fold 6 reduced its weight further to 239 grams. With Galaxy Z Fold 7 came an even more ambitious goal:
“Could a foldable be lighter than a bar-type flagship smartphone?”
Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 7, weighing 215 grams, which was literally lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra bar-type flagship phone at 218 grams.
Samsung already achieved its ambitious goal last year by making a foldable lighter than a slab-style flagship phone. The company didn’t stop, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 introducing a more practical form factor and cutting the weight to just 201 grams.
