Android 16’s Earthquake Warnings feel outdated over Samsung’s One UI 8

Published

on

Samsung One UI 8

Samsung is adding a new earthquake warning system to its One UI 8 update, and it might be even better than the one from Google’s Android 16. While it’s still not live in the current beta version, @GalaxyTechie already spotted it, and it looks promising.

Just like Google’s system, Samsung’s earthquake alert can warn people just before an earthquake hits their area. It shows a full-screen message and plays a loud sound to alert you quickly. But Samsung goes a bit further by adding more helpful features.

Samsung’s earthquake alert feature lets users preview how the alert will look and sound, which can help people know what to expect. It also keeps a history of past alerts. Users can even choose how and when they want to get alerts based on the magnitude of the earthquake and the time of day.

Moreover, it can show nearby emergency shelters. The alert can also display your emergency contacts and medical info, which can be important for first responders during an emergency.

Google’s earthquake warning system is strong and works on many Android phones, but it doesn’t have all these extra features. It’s not clear why Samsung made its own version, but it might be for areas where Google’s service doesn’t work like China.

Still, Samsung’s feature looks like a great step forward. With features like emergency info, shelter locations, and preview options, it gives users more control and support during earthquakes. It would be great if Google added some of these tools to its version.

It is reported via a reliable tipster, @GerwinvGeissen, that Samsung’s Earthquake Warning feature may be exclusive to China, similar to Galaxy apps, including Smart Manager, Bixby Touch, and more.

For now, Samsung’s One UI 8 earthquake warning system is showing how safety alerts can be even smarter. It is expected that Samsung will soon make this feature available.

One UI 6 Watch Program ends

At Unpacked, Samsung officially confirmed the One UI 8 Watch 4/Classic upgrade. That said, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic are now confirmed to be getting the Wear OS 6-based One UI 8 Watch upgrade this year.

On June 30, Samsung kicked off the One UI 8 Watch Beta Program. The company mentioned that the Watch 5 and later models are eligible. It sparked a debate that Samsung has dropped the Watch 4 series from Wear OS 6 eligibility.

Well, the official confirmation at Unpacked has cleared all the doubts.

Wear OS 6 plus One UI 8 Watch

Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic are the first Samsung smartwatches that launch with Wear OS. While the software support is about to end this August, Samsung is still bringing a big free upgrade, marking the 4th OS release.

Wear OS 6 will come to the Watch 4 series as its fourth major update. This new OS arrives on Samsung smartwatches as part of One UI 8 Watch. The development hasn’t yet begun, so a specific timeline is tough to predict.

One UI 6 Watch Program ends

Samsung’s new One UI 8 Watch succeeds the One UI 6 Watch version. The company has entirely skipped v7 to match the Galaxy Watch and One UI Watch numbering. Like One UI 7 for Mobile, One UI 8 Watch brings big visual revamps.

The new design and tiles are being hated by many. Samsung is likely to make some visual changes during the Beta Program. Notably, the entire focus is shifted to offering streamlined user experiences to Galaxy Watch owners.

Meanwhile, your Galaxy Watch is also getting a big AI upgrade. Google started rolling out the Gemini AI assistant to Wear OS watches running Wear OS 4+. Samsung’s entire Wear OS smartwatch lineup is eligible for this AI upgrade.

Overlay (image) translation

If you’ve ever tried translating text in an image, you’ll love the upgrades to One UI 8’s Overlay Translation feature.

1. Improved translated text overlay size

The enhanced overlay translation mechanism keeps the text size closer to the original, even if the translation is longer, minimizing the sense of discrepancy before and after translation.

2. Improved translated text background overlap

The improved function now detects the background and places translated text so it doesn’t blend in or overlap, making everything clear and neat.

1. Enhance-X

  • Focus Shift: Just tap on the subject in your photo, and the app sharpens it up automatically for a crisp, clear shot.
  • Crop & Upscale: Zoom in and crop without losing quality. AI boosts the resolution, so your images stay sharp and detailed.

These Enhance-X app updates are coming after July 30, 2025.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Now Brief One UI 8

Samsung has confirmed that the Now Bar feature in One UI 8 will now work with third-party apps. At the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event, the company shows this expanded Now Bar support on Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 smartphones.

The Now Bar was first introduced in One UI 7 on the Galaxy S25 series. It appears on the lock screen and shows useful information like music playing, sports scores, and updates. But until now, it only worked with Samsung apps and a few Google ones, which made it feel limited.

Today, Samsung announced new devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and Galaxy Watch 8. All of these devices come with One UI 8 and the improved Now Bar. Now, the Now Bar can connect with more third-party apps, though Samsung hasn’t said exactly which ones yet.

Samsung hasn’t listed all the supported apps yet, but this shows that the company is improving its Now Bar functionality. With third-party support, users might be able to see things like food delivery updates, flight details, or weather from their favorite apps right on the lock screen.

Aside from this, Samsung also said that the small cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the new Flip 7 FE will now support more apps, not just Samsung’s built-in widgets. This change will make the cover screen more useful, just like on other foldable phones.

Currently, stable One UI 8 is only available on the Galaxy Z Flip 7, Galaxy Z Flip7 FE, and Galaxy Z Fold 7. These devices are now available for pre-order, with trade-in deals worth up to $1,000 and a $50 credit for early buyers.
