Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: Reviewing big One UI 7 changes

Samsung has released One UI 7 for the Galaxy S23 series worldwide, with new features to change the way you interact with the device. Therefore, we’ve brought some of the most significant upgrades that make this update special.
The latest One UI version has graphical and animation advancements, followed by new upgrades that contribute to the end-user experience. That said, the update refreshes the entire S23 Ultra into a brand-new flagship.
Home Screen
Here are the four key upgrades
- Redesigned icons
- Better widgets
- Large folders
- App and widget customizations
Samsung redesigned the icons to make them relevant to their apps and increased on-screen visibility with a new color pallets.
One UI is known for its vast range of app widgets, but the 7th version takes them to a new level with more on-screen features and interactive elements.
One of the tiniest upgrades is the Large folder, you can enlarge any small folder and use it as a self-served app gallery to launch an app without opening the folder first. These helps to keep the screen clean and your favorite apps in one place.
With home screen settings, you can now change the app icon size and enable/disable app or widget labels to customize the home screen appearance.
Features Upgrades
Task Changer
The task changer has been revised with new placements for recommended apps and background tasks, and it looks good enough to separate from the previous version.
Vertical app drawer
Samsung released One UI 7 for the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra with a new vertical app drawer. It changes the app scroll presentation in a vertical orientation. Since you already have a side scroll on the home screen, this may provide a different perspective for app explorations.
Quick settings and notifications panel
Samsung has separated these two key areas for a wider accessibility. For example, you can access the quick settings by swiping down from the top right and repeating the same action from the top left to open notifications.
The expanded area allows you to explore these two features on a wider field, and features such as priority notifications as well as other important notifications look better in a dedicated space. On the other hand, the quick settings are refreshed with new elements and enhanced switches.
With added features, you can swap the places or return to a unified quick settings like before.
Stand out additions
One UI 7 brings Live notifications and Now bar, two of the most useful capabilities. These help you to stay updated with active background apps and services, for example, timer and music. Now bar and live notifications aren’t limited to showcase because you can also interact with their key features.
For example, when you send an active music playback app in the background, the app will turn into a live notification on the status bar or notifications area or a Now Bar (on lock screen). There you will see the next or previous track or play/pause without unlocking the device.
My favorite feature of the Now Bar is Google Sports to check live scores from any game and teams on the phone.
AI
One UI 7 is more intelligent thanks to updated machine learning algorithms, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has improved the object eraser, which works like a charm. Drawing assist is another great tool to generate AI images and stickers on the go with a sketch or a text description.
Interpreter has been found as the most improved AI service in the entire update, with faster interpretation and translation to other language in real-time. These are just some noteworthy improvements, but Galaxy AI has numerous other options, such as writing tools, browsing assist and more.
Animations
Other than the UI and features, Samsung has blended smooth animations across the system. When you launch an app, send it to the background or split the screen into two, jumping from one screen to another, the smoothness will appear everywhere.
Take the charging animations, for example, the Galaxy S23’s task bar and the lock screen immediately show the charging visualization as soon as you connect the charger.
That’s important because the Galaxy S23 series has maintained the fluency, which means, the S23 devices trigger new animations that show the charging process without interrupting the user interactions.
Camera app
Samsung’s flagship phones are known for their camera capabilities, and the S23 Ultra is no exception to this tradition. Therefore, the redesigned and restructured camera app works perfect on the device. The performance and the camera features are similar to the S24 series, but a few of the things might be missing, including the Log camera.
Conclusion
One UI 7 has completely revamped the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and its siblings, and these changes improved the user experience. We encourage users to explore the software and find new gems during this discovery.

Side-by-Side: One UI 8 Gesture Animations are clearly smoother than One UI 7 [Watch]

Samsung is tweaking its user interface again with One UI 8, and one of the changes people are talking about is the app opening (gesture) animations.
A recent post on X by tipster Ice Universe shows a comparison between One UI 7 and an early version of One UI 8, focusing on how these gesture animations have gotten better.
In the comparison, One UI 8’s app opening animation looks smoother and more elegant, with a “decelerated effect” that feels a bit like the animations on some other phone systems, like iOS.
The video has two Galaxy S25 Ultra side by side: one with One UI 7 and the other with the early One UI 8. You can see that the early internal One UI 8 build makes the animation feel more fluid.
The early version of One UI 8 looks promising, especially when it comes to animations. This focus on animation is part of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to improve its software. Watch the video below:
On the left is One UI 7 and on the right is One UI 8 (early internal version).
The biggest difference between the two is that the app starts animation.,

Other updates coming with One UI 8 might include better design and new features like improved security settings. For Samsung users, these little tweaks can make a difference.
Samsung is working on making the user experience better, step by step. Whether these changes will be in the final release or not, they point to a good direction for Samsung’s updates.
One UI 8 will debut this July with the Galaxy Z Flip7 and Fold7. The company is expected to start the Beta Program for the S25 series and Z6 line foldables to test out the new operating system.
One UI 8.5 is expected to follow One UI 8.0 early next year. Samsung might launch the Galaxy S26 series with Android 16-based One UI 8.5 version, with new AI features and tweaks likely.
