One UI 8

Samsung has started working on One UI 8 and some program code has revealed that this new software could mark a major boost in system animations and effects.

The South Korean phone maker has been on top of the smartphone world for a long time. However, its animations were always lagging behind Apple and some Chinese competitors.

These drawbacks appeared due to the lack of operating system optimizations. However, One UI 7 has shown major improvements.

It brings a big leap in animations and smoothness as well as touch responsive. An early version of the software has shown impressive results. You can see these new changes in quick settings and home screen.

One UI 8 could take this development forward with “decal shader”. Smartprix has found this term in new One UI 7 apps as the following:

  1. field private static final SUPPORT_DECAL_SHSADER:Z
  2. Lcom/honeyspace/common/Rune;->SUPPORT_DECAL_SHADER:z

These are only citations but there could be a bigger picture behind their sudden appearances.

Decal shader is a term generally used in game development but its core fundamentals are shared between user interface, materials, and animation effects. Since this discussion is dedicated to One UI, we can focus on UI and animations.

Decals can be very useful in improving UI elements such as icons and animation speed or effects for touch interactions. Decal shaders could remain active on the skin level and may not require deeper integration into the operating system.

Therefore, it doesn’t hinder the core functionality or increase the load on system processes. Eventually, these processes may not take an extra part in the smartphone’s resources and make the entire animation and effects efficient. However, we don’t know how Samsung would approach this shader-related development.

Decal shader’s major implication should be visible in effects – how it looks to the users on the screen. For example, when you unlock the device, it will trigger a smooth transition or switch between apps, show an interesting button reaction to a touch input, and more.

Animations

One UI 7 has laid the foundation for smoother visuals and Samsung could continue this development in 2025. This makes sense because Samsung phones come with a lot of features tagged with industry-leading hardware in each flagship device.

Providing top-notch software is equally important for it to complete a flagship package. Not only premium devices, but this will benefit Samsung’s software experience in mid-range and budget devices.

Amid these revelations, we could only hope for Samsung to take One UI 8 animations to the next level with optimized performance.
