Samsung Double-Fold Device Patent

Samsung has recently got approval on its new double-fold smartphone patent. The company has patented the multi-fold device with WIPO, indicating that the dual-fold (commonly known as tri-fold) is in the pipeline.

PatentlyApple spotted WIPO published a new Samsung double-fold smartphone patent. The patent document shows a “Multi-Foldable Electronic Device” that features a unique design offering two form factors: “fold in” and “fold out.”

Following Huawei’s entry, it was rumored that Samsung may launch its first tri-fold phone in 2025. Related patents are being surfaced regularly but just patent filings don’t indicate the potential commercialization of the device.

Samsung includes schematic diagrams of the multi-fold device in different views. The looks include a rear view of an unfolded state, a front view of an unfolded state, and thickness in an unfolded state, folded once, and folded twice.

The device may also include two magnets to keep the panel patched. It’s a nifty solution to extend durability and reduce accidental openings of the panel. It will also support the hinge as full pressure won’t put on the hinge area.

Additionally, Samsung’s multi-fold patent brings several sensors including a hall sensor, an acceleration sensor, an angular velocity sensor, a gyro sensor, a folding detection sensor, a proximity sensor, a barometric pressure sensor, a magnetic sensor, a biometric sensor, a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor, or a fingerprint recognition sensor.

Overall, the findings point out that Samsung is working to innovate a fine design that would be durable enough to survive. The regular book-type foldable phones are already accused of panel failure after a certain period.

A tri-fold will be even less durable, requiring an innovative design approach. Samsung Display has already showcased tri-fold prototypes. Samsung Mobile division continues to explore innovative ways to double fold a smartphone.
