Samsung SmartThings hits 20 million users in South Korea

Samsung announced SmartThings user base in South Korea surpassed 20 million. The company revealed that it has reached this milestone of crossing 20M (registered users) as of December 27.
Upgrades to SmartThings’ AI features have led to a rapid increase in Korean users. The company has also highlighted sharp growth in sales of AI home appliances behind SmartThings growth.
Notably, SmartThings’ connection rate with major AI appliances was found to be very high this year. 92% of buyers of the Bespoke AI Steam robot vacuum and 80% of buyers of the Bespoke AI Combo all-in-one washer-dryer opted for SmartThings.
The key features used in SmartThings were AI-based, everyday functions such as:
- Home Care: It helps with remote diagnostics and management of devices
- Energy Saving: It monitors and manages the energy usage of connected devices
- Pet Care: It checks the location of pets and remotely controls appliances based on their condition
Notably, features like direct A/S registration when a device malfunction is detected via the app, converting saved energy into membership points, and checking pet status graphs showed a high increase rate of 72%, 71%, and 79%, respectively, as compared usage rates from early January and mid-December.
A Samsung official said, “As the purchase of AI home appliances increases, more customers are actively using SmartThings, and usage patterns have become more diverse. We will continue to introduce various SmartThings features that create a more convenient lifestyle.”
More than 300 partner companies’ products are connected to over 100 devices within SmartThings, Samsung noted. SmartThings continues to expand its ecosystem based on its excellent openness and scalability.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 to enjoy the same Google AI Pro perks as the S25

Google is likely to offer AI Pro benefits with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. The Galaxy S25, launched earlier this year, debuted with six months of free Gemini Advanced subscription and the same perks, potentially expanding to foldables.
Samsung will be holding an Unpacked next month, a mega event. Google is expected to take the stage to unveil its AI advancements and the AI Pro subscription, which will likely be available for six months, shipping with new Fold and Flip models.
Android Authority discovered some evidence in the latest Google App Beta, suggesting AI Pro freebies with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7. These perks would be the same as Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series and Google’s Pixel 9 lineup.
While the exact duration of the free Google AI Pro subscription for the Fold 7 and Flip 7 isn’t confirmed, the Galaxy S25’s six-month offer sets a precedent. It’s reasonable to expect a similar timeframe for these foldables.
Samsung’s focus on AI continues to grow. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 will likely highlight “Gemini Live,” a conversational AI feature, alongside camera and durability upgrades, as teased for the July Unpacked event.
The inclusion of Google AI Pro makes the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 more appealing. It positions them as strong competitors in the AI-driven smartphone market, building on Samsung’s Galaxy AI advancements.
For those eyeing Samsung’s latest foldable smartphones, this Google AI Pro perk adds significant value. Stay tuned for the Unpacked event to confirm the offer’s details and explore the full range of new features.

Samsung Onyx Cinema LED Screen makes European debut at CineEurope 2025

Samsung has launched its latest Onyx Cinema LED screen in Europe during CineEurope 2025, held in Barcelona from June 16 to 19. This new screen was first shown in the U.S. at CinemaCon in April.
The Onyx screen is the world’s first DCI-certified cinema LED display by Samsung. It shows movies in 4K resolution and can play them at up to 120 frames per second, which makes the picture extra smooth.
Moreover, its HDR visuals have peak brightness levels up to 300 nits, true blacks, and very accurate colors. Onyx is available in four sizes – 5, 10, 14, and 20 meters, and it can also be adjusted to fit different theater spaces.
Samsung offers a 10-year warranty for the Onyx screen, the longest in the cinema LED market. This helps theaters save money and keeps the screen working well for a long time.
Also, Samsung works closely with Pixar Animation Studios to create movies in HDR, a way of making images brighter and more colorful. Pixar’s new film Elio, coming out on June 18, will be shown in 4K HDR on the Onyx screen. Pixar will also use an Onyx screen at its studio to check the colors and brightness while making movies.
At CineEurope 2025, Samsung is showing the Onyx LED screen and other new cinema technologies to movie theaters and filmmakers for the European Market.

Samsung’s new QLED display tech could lower TV prices

Samsung is collaborating with Hansol Chemical to develop a new type of quantum dot (QD) film for its QLED TVs. This collab aims to make the film simpler and cheaper to produce, without affecting picture quality.
Right now, QLED TVs use QD sheets with several layers, including two special “barrier films.” Its structure is: barrier film – PET – QD layer – PET – barrier film. These barrier films protect the QD layer inside from things like moisture and oxygen, which can damage the film over time.
But these barrier films are expensive. And these films make up about 40% of the total QD film cost. Also, Samsung currently depends on a Japanese company, Dainippon Printing (DNP), to supply them.
To save money, Samsung and Hansol are now developing a QD sheet that removes both barrier films. The new structure will be much simpler: PET – QD layer – PET. But it creates a new challenge, which is how to protect the QD layer without the barrier films
For that, Samsung is developing a new technique to coat each tiny QD particle individually, which could keep them safe from moisture and oxygen. But this new process must be cheaper than using barrier films for it to make sense.
While this change is for QLED TVs, Samsung’s QD-OLED TVs use a different method. It means that if Samsung develops and uses this new technology, the price of the QLED TVs could go down.
Industry experts say Samsung has been researching this for years. If successful, this new QD sheet could lower production costs and reduce dependence on expensive materials. However, it will take time until mass production.
