Samsung smartwatch bands reportedly contain high levels of toxic “forever chemicals.” A study reveals that most smartwatch bands from various vendors are subjected to critical PFAS (commonly known as toxic forever chemicals).

Environmental Science & Technology Letters recently published a new study on smartwatch bands. The report (via PhoneArena) suggests that including forever chemicals in watch bands could lead to serious health problems.

As the chemical is used in bands, it could be absorbed through your skin. It can also get into your pores if you’re sweating while wearing the band. Due to the nature of the chemicals, bands can lead to some pretty serious health problems like:

  • Cancer
  • Immune system issues
  • Developmental problems in kids

Researchers tested bands from Apple, Apple/Nike, CASETiFY, Fitbit, Google, KingofKings, Modal, Samsung, Tighesen, and Vanjua. Most tested brands use high levels of a PFAS chemical called perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) in watch bands.

In particular, Apple Sport bands, Galaxy Watch Rugged Sport bands, Galaxy Watch Sport T-Buckle bands, and Pixel Watch Active bands contain PFHxA. Researchers also found a higher volume of PFHxA in watch bands than in other products.

The very high concentrations of PFHxA readily extractable from the surfaces of fluoroelastomer watch bands, together with the current limited knowledge on the dermal absorption of PFHxA, demonstrate the need for more comprehensive exposure studies of PFHxA.

Meanwhile, some Galaxy Watch bands are made of different materials. The Watch Ultra Marine bands, Watch Ultra Peakform bands, and Watch 7 Sport bands are made with HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber).

Smartwatches have become quite popular after the Covid-19 period. As people are more concerned about their health and wellness, the saturation of watches and health trackers is expanding, but, the product must have zero risks for yourself.

The report includes almost every leading smartwatch brand globally. The companies must address potential concerns and raise consumer awareness so that any risks can be resolved before they turn into a hoax.
