Samsung One UI 7 brings UI upgrades and software reshuffling, which is way more prominent in the new notifications panel combined with live activities unfolding in the background.

What are Live Notifications

It keeps you updated with key apps and services while prioritizing their progress in the notifications panel. This addition helps to remain updated via system UI without opening apps or the settings menu.

With this feature, Samsung has expanded the scope of notifications in this One UI version, bringing a whole new user experience.

This feature applies to apps and services that are active and could be sent in the background including

  • Clock
  • Voice recorder
  • Emergency Sharing
  • Samsung Health
  • Interpreter
  • Maps
  • Samsung Notes
  • Bixby

You can enable or disable these apps and services from Settings at any time.

How it works

To start with live notifications, open the Clock app and start a stopwatch or exercise in the Health app. Then, send it to the background.

Now, you will see a wide pill-shaped indicator in the status bar on the top-left side of the screen. This pill includes a timer counter for a timer or stopwatch. If you see such a pill in the status bar, it means a live notification is in the action. Next, you can tap on this pill to expand its view for wider visibility.

One UI 7 allows you to run multiple live notifications simultaneously, and you can switch them with a simple swipe gesture.

Once switched, the swapped notification pill will appear in the foreground, overshadowing the one in the background. New animations also provide a smooth effect of expanding and shrinking the taskbar.

You can see all of the live notifications listed in the notification panel. Swipe down from the top left side to open the notification panel and check them all.

Notably, these notifications are prioritized in the hierarchy. That’s why, you will see them on top of the notification panel when the system detects them running.

These notifications are separated under the “Live notifications” label, followed by a section for all other app and system notifications installed in the device.

Live notifications expand through the lock screen with the Now Bar, you will see a pill shape in between the two shortcut buttons. I’ve explained a lot about this new capability in a separate article, please check it here.

Improvements

Despite its immense practicality, Samsung One UI 7 has limited apps and services supporting the live notifications feature.

It would be better to see an expansion for reminders, social media updates, emails, invitations, business meetings, alarms, timers, or anything you can enable notifications.

That being said, we can only hope for a wide live notifications expansion in the near future.
