Samsung Display Assistant App: Features and Walkthrough
Samsung has one of the best display management features you can wish for in a smartphone and recently unveiled a new app called Display Assistant that takes these display customizations to a new level for One UI 7 users. The app is still under testing but we brought you a walkthrough of its capabilities.
Here are the Samsung Display Assistant features:
- App’s screen timeout
- Keep screen on
- Brightness limit profile
- Adaptive brightness options
- Standard refresh rate apps
- Screen curtain
App’s screen timeout
Screen timeout detects the smartphone’s usage and triggers sleep mode when no interactions are detected. This saves battery life and cools down background processes. Samsung offers different screen timeout sessions including:
- 15 seconds
- 30 seconds
- 1 minute
- 2 minute
- 5 minute
- 10 minute
Or, you can enable “Keep screen on while viewing” to keep the display awake while you are facing toward the display. The phone uses the front camera to detect your face and restricts the device from going to sleep.
However, your device will stay on collectively, which will burn more battery.
The new app’s screen timeout feature will let you set timeout for apps separately. For example, a 2-minute timeout to Gmail will keep the phone awake for this duration after launch.
Notice that the timeout will start after the last touch on the screen. This limit resets to 0 with each new touch. It will revert back to global settings (ex. 15 seconds) when you close the app.
Auto dim
While selecting a screen timeout, you will get an option to auto-dim the app. Similar to its name, the screen will quickly dim if there are no changes or touches detected on the screen. It will remain dim until the screen timeout occurs.
Addition and removal
You can add or remove the apps from the settings or change their timeout. Once added, the display assistant app will show you a graphical showcase of top apps based on their timeout session.
Note: Higher timeout will increase battery consumption
Keep screen on
Manually, you can keep the screen for only 10 minutes but this feature can increase the ceiling to 30 minutes without even modifying the system’s settings.
The app has a custom “Keep screen on” quick settings button. You have to add to the quick settings. Afterward, you can enable the screen for 30 minutes by tapping on the quick settings button. However, this feature has a few limitations including:
- The screen will turn off along with this feature when you lock the device with the power key
- It will turn when the phone restarts
- The battery level declines below 15%
Brightness limit profile
Samsung devices limit brightness and other features when the temperature rises or becomes too hot. This helps to prevent the device from overheating and protect the inner components.
This feature has two settings
- Standard – Keeps the brightness limited at high temperature
- Light – Enables peak brightness at high temperatures but the device cools down slowly.
Adaptive brightness options
Adaptive brightness adjusts brightness and color contrasts based on the light around your surroundings. This new feature allows you to change brightness speed between 1x, 2x, and 4x.
You will have the option to reset usage patterns and the app will learn your smartphone use cases once again to adjust this speed.
Standard refresh rate
Samsung phones come with up to 120hz refresh rate, despite providing smoother visuals, this setting seeks more resources and battery consumption compared to the standard 60hz.
This option helps you to assign standard refresh rates to individual apps without disturbing the global setting. For example, you can assign a standard refresh rate to Samsung Internet. Once launched, the app will run 60Hz, while the phone will still have a 120Hz adaptive rate.
You can add or remove almost every installed app on the phone to this section.
Screen curtain
The app has this feature for a specific reason, allowing you to put the screen in a doze state while the app runs for a long time. This capability hides the screen content from peaks. Similar to the Keep screen on the feature, it also adds a quick settings button.
Unfortunately, the app kept crashing after starting the screen curtain. This appears to be a beta bug, which could resolve with a stable release.
Others
The beta version also has some hidden features including:
- Show expired popup
- Disabled reason Battery low
- Disabled reason User switched
- Disabled reason another wake lock exists
These features work with the Keep screen on.
Availability
This display assistant app is available for Samsung One UI 7 and is limited to only a few regions under beta testing. It will expand widely with the stable release. We’ll update this article when that happens.
