Samsung Might Make Curved Screen Phones Again!

Google switched to flat displays starting with the Pixel 8, which launched before the S24 Ultra. The S24 Ultra introduced a flat screen with exceptional brightness and enhanced durability. Now, it seems Samsung is preparing to make curved screen phones again.

We’ve seen Samsung gradually reducing the curved screen approach. Meanwhile, the company seems to be preparing to launch curved screen models again with even more durable design, vibrant colors, and stunning brightness.

MSPoweruser spotted a patent filed by Samsung in June 2024 before the USPTO, which was published this month. The patent document reveals a curved display Galaxy S Ultra phone with special mechanisms to enhance its durability.

The new design also aims to prevent leaks of sealing liquid during assembly.

Technically, the design structure features two sealing layers and a separate section that is specifically designed to prevent spills from the sealing liquid.

Samsung named it the “blocking part” which is part of the visible portion of the phone’s design. It is attached directly to its frame through a series of special grooves.

The patent is a great development for those who love using curved display phones. Such design differentiates from other flagship phones due to screen edges. However, it’s uncertain whether Samsung will commercialize the patented device.

Galaxy S23 Ultra marked the last curved-screen smartphone from Samsung. However, Samsung apparently exploring ways to bring back curved-screen phones with durable designs. To be noted, the Galaxy S25 Ultra will feature a flat screen.

Galaxy S6 Edge was the first Samsung phone that featured a curved display. Later, the company expanded the curved panels to several flagships. Notably, the entire S25 lineup had curved screens, but it remain limited to S21 Ultra in the following lineup.

Samsung is set to launch the Galaxy S25 series on January 22 in the US. The company also unveil a thinner Galaxy S25 Slim or Special Edition in the second quarter. The first affordable foldable device could also be coming in the latter half of 2025.
