OpenAI back in the race for Apple iPhone 16/iOS18

Apple starts fresh talks with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI to bring AI features to iPhone 16/iOS 18. The iPhone maker was in touch with Google to use Gemini Nano in the next-gen iPhone models. However, the company has restarted discussions with OpenAI for the same.

According to Bloomberg, Apple and OpenAI started discussing AI features for iPhone 16/iOS 18, and the terms of an agreement. The report says that Apple could reach an agreement with both OpenAI and Google, or it could choose a completely different company.

However, Apple has not yet decided which company’s AI to adopt. Earlier this year, the company discussed a deal with OpenAI, but there has been no progress since then. The next iPhone OS is expected to include some new features based on Apple’s own LLM.

“This strategic partnership is a missing piece in the Apple AI strategy and combines forces with Google for Gemini to power some of the AI features Apple is bringing to market,” said Daniel Ives, an analyst at Wedbush.

Apple will hold its annual developers conference in June this year. Therefore, any announcement regarding the AI partnership before June is unlikely. However, OpenAI is most likely expected to boast the next-gen of iPhones with artificial intelligence.

“This is a major win for Google to get onto the Apple ecosystem and have access to the golden installed base of Cupertino with clearly a major licence fee attached to this,” Daniel said, referring to Apple’s California headquarters.
