Samsung reacts to chip supply rumors for Huawei Mate 60 Pro
Samsung denied the rumors of supplying chips to Huawei for the new Mate 60 Pro smartphone. The company disclosed that it never traded with Huawei after the 2020 US sanctions. Notably, it was reported that some of Samsung’s chips are used in Huawei phones.
Huawei managed to use memory chips made by Samsung, Kioxia and even Micron as well as SK hynix despite U.S. sanctions on the Chinese tech company in 2020. With SK hynix’s 512GB NAND flagship chips found in a teardown of Huawei’s Mate 60 Pro, questions on the efficacy of memory chip sanctions were raised.

“Samsung has been abiding by export regulations set forth by the U.S. government and does not hold business relationships outlined within the guardrails,” a spokesperson at Samsung Electronics said.
The Chinese company has deployed DRAM chips from Samsung and Micron and NAND Flash chips by Kioxia over the past three years. This is to say that China had either accumulated enough supply to last these years or found a hidden channel to keep bringing in foreign-made semiconductors.
Back in November 2021, Samsung managed to produce 14-nanometer LPDDR5X mobile DRAM chips using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology. As per report, esearchers from Tsinghua University have begun developing its own microchip production method dubbed steady-state microbunching (SSMB).
Samsung’s profit is increasing, but the recovery growth rate is weakening. The third quarter ended on September 30, and market research reports started to surface. Reuters reported that Samsung’s profit will rise in Q3 YoY amid AI chip competition.
According to the report, Samsung could report a significant rise in quarterly profit, with an estimated operating profit of $7.67 billion (10.33 trillion won) in the third quarter compared to 2.43 trillion won a year earlier.
Reuters highlighted that Samsung’s recovery pace has slowed down. As demand for smartphone and PC chips weakens, the company’s profit share from the chip business impacted the overall growth leading to a decline in recovery.
SK Hynix and Micron are all-time challengers to Samsung Elec. However, the company is also getting intense pressure from Chinese competitors in commodity chips. DRAM business is also in threat due to late entry into the high-margin AI chip market.
“Samsung is more likely to lose the title of number 1 DRAM vendor in case of a softer commodity DRAM market,” Daniel Kim, an analyst at Macquarie Equity Research said in a recent note, referring to DRAM chips that are widely used in computers and smartphones.

Samsung will roll out Android 15 to Galaxy devices in 2025, but we had a sneak peek of One UI 7.0 at SDC24. Google is all set to start the Public Android 15 rollout this month, while Samsung has pushed back the One UI 7 Beta to the end of the year.
The company is working on the Android 15-based One UI 7.0. The Galaxy S24 series will be the first to get it on the Beta channel. Dozens of Galaxy devices are eligible for this major upgrade, forming a big rollout later this year.
Android 15
The new OS entered Developer Preview in February and Public Beta in April. Google so far released four major Public Beta updates for Pixel devices. The Android 15’s QPR Beta activity has also started ahead of the October release for Pixels.
Android 15 focuses on improving device performance and power efficiency. It’s also well-optimized for the artificial intelligence era. Consumers can expect faster app loading, longer battery backup, enhanced security and privacy, and core improvements at the OS level.
One UI 7
At SDC24, Samsung teased some One UI 7 changes and features. The Beta Program will start in late 2024, while Stable set to be released next year. The S23 series received One UI 6 Beta in August last year, but this year’s schedule has entirely changed.
One UI 7.0
Samsung held this year’s Developer Conference on October 3. The event’s stage was utilized to introduce new One UI 7 features and enhancements. The company has also showcased advancements in Tizen and SmartThings.
One UI Beta build can be installed on your primary handset, but we prefer avoiding it. If you don’t want to counter bugs and functional errors, Beta isn’t for you. Consider waiting till the Stable rollout commences enjoying One UI 6.1.1.

Enhanced on-device and cloud AI
The Galaxy S24 and Z6 series are powered by the Gemini Nano AI model. Google is working on Gemini Nano v2, which will have more AI capabilities, power efficiency, and reliability. Smartphones equipped with this new AI model would benefit.

Smart Circle to Search
Circle to Search is a great feature that debuted with the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung and Google expanded it to their flagship devices. Besides, Google is working to fulfill its commitment to installing Circle to Search on 200 million devices worldwide.
This functionality should be further optimized with system functions. The addition of the translate button is worth praising and we need Circle to Search to evolve further. Apple’s iPhones have no similar or equivalent feature to Circle to Search.
