WhatsApp doesn’t allow you to hide your phone number as it’s the base of the platform. Meanwhile, inputs suggest that you could soon be able to hide your phone number on WhatsApp, thanks to the ability to pick a username for the account, similar to Telegram and Instagram.

As discovered by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing the ability to let users set a unique username for accounts. The change has been spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.11.15 on some accounts. However, the feature is not accessible for now, while future availability is expected.

With the ability to choose a username, WhatsApp’s users will have the opportunity to add another layer of privacy to their accounts by making phone number hidden. The screenshot shows the app has got username field within the app settings available within WhatsApp Settings > Profile.

For your information, WhatsApp’s username function is under development and it will be delivered to beta testers in a future update. Besides this, the platform is also working on enhancements to the user interface of the application such as the bottom navigation bar.
