Google Play Store auto archive feature to save apps from uninstallation

Google Play Store auto archive feature

Google Play Store is the platform where all Android users can find their favorite apps, games, movies, TV shows, and more. But sometimes the storage of our smartphone falls short to install new apps, so Google has introduced a new feature for Play Store called Auto Archive.

The search giant has announced an Auto-archive feature, which lets users free up space on their devices without completely uninstalling the app. The new feature offers an easy way to manage device storage and a great way for developers to reduce the chances of their apps being uninstalled.

The company has introduced this new feature to reduce unnecessary uninstalls and help users install new apps successfully. It automatically frees up approximately 60% of the app’s storage space without deleting the app’s presence or user data from the device.

Once a user enabled it, less-used apps will be partially removed from the device to save space, while preserving the app icon and the user’s personal app data. When users want to start using the app again, they can click to download again and start where they left off.

It is worth mentioning that the Auto archive feature is currently available only for developers who are using App Bundle to publish their apps. In addition, if your app supports archiving then users will be less likely to see it among uninstall suggestions.

How to enable this feature?

When trying to install a new app when your device’s storage is full, a pop-up window appears asking if the user wants to enable auto-archive. If the user clicks the Turn On option, unused apps on the user’s device are auto-archived to free up enough space for a new app request.

Google Messages adds waveforms to Voice Recorder UI

Google Messages app Voice recorder ui

Google Messages is getting a new look for its voice recorder UI. The microphone icon in the text field will change to a waveform icon, which is different from the voice typing button in Gboard.

Instead of holding down the mic to record, you will now see a panel with a start/stop button and options to cancel, delete, or attach the recording. You will also see a waveform and a timer while recording, and you can play back the recording before sending it.

The voice messages preview will also show a waveform between the play/pause button and the timer, making it more noticeable than the current straight line.

These changes are not widely available yet, but some users have reported seeing them on their phones. These new changes are part of a bigger redesign that Google is working on for Messages, which includes a revamped home screen that is still in beta testing. Google might announce new features soon.
