Be it Android or iOS, almost all smartphones nowadays come with irreplaceable batteries for a slimmer look and lighter weight. Meanwhile, the EU now wants Samsung and other brands to re-adopt a user-replaceable battery on their devices.

With this implementation, European Union aims to make batteries more sustainable and reusable as it will let consumers easily remove and replace them themselves. The agreed rules will cover the entire life cycle of a battery from design to end of life.

It worth mentioning that not only smartphones but the new user replaceable battery order will apply to all electronic devices, including Samsung, in EU. Additionally, other all types of batteries in the market like industrial batteries, automotive batteries, and batteries used in two-wheelers and electric vehicles (EVs) will also be replaceable.

As per the information, these replacable batteries will carry labels and QR codes with information related to their capacity, performance, durability, chemical composition, as well as a “separate collection” symbol.

At the same time, LMT batteries, industrial batteries with a capacity of more than 2 kWh, and EV batteries will also be required to have a “digital battery passport”, which will include battery model information as well as information specific to the individual battery and its use.

The report further says that the portable batteries must be designed on devices around three and a half years after the law goes into effect. It means from early 2024, we will start seeing replaceable batteries on different devices.
