Huawei recently revealed that it licensed key 5G technologies to Samsung Electronics. Now, TheElec report reveals that Samsung transferred 98 patents it has in the US to Huawei in November 2022. It’s said that the worth of transferred patents is equal to the difference in their cross-licensing agreement.

According to the report, Samsung handed over its 81 patents in 2019 to Huawei, and with the recent 98 patents, the count reaches 179 so far. Notably, Samsung and Huawei signed a cross-licensing agreement in 2019 to end up ongoing patent disputes.

Since the recent patent transfer happened about three years after the last one, it’s assumed that both of these vendors renewed their technology-sharing agreement. The transferred patents include telecommunication, charging, camera, display, and others.

Besides, family patents to those in the US that are registered in South Korea have also been transferred. Occasionally, one party pays more licensing fees compared to the other due to their difference in the number and quality of patents in cross-licensing agreements.

Patent disputes between the Korean and Chinese tech giant involved those related to telecommunication, in which Huawei has a lead. Hence, Samsung is presumably shifting the patents as the cross-licensing agreement mostly involves 5G patents and it has fewer than Huawei.
