Android 14 Predictive back gesture

Google officially revealed that Android 14 will bring the “Predictive back gesture” to all smartphones, including Samsung, by default. The company initially started to work on this feature with Android 13 OS. It reminds you when you’re exiting an app to your homescreen.

Android smartphones come with an easy back gesture that lets you go back to the previous screen or home screen with a single swipe. But sometimes it accidentally takes you out of the app, which is quite irritating when you are performing an important task on your phone.

Meanwhile, to get rid of this problem, Google is bringing the Predictive back gesture with the upcoming Android 14 operating system. This feature will give you a preview of the previous screen before performing the back gesture.

9To5Google has spotted this feature working on the Google Calendar app. A person opens for an event and then slowly swipes back. While swiping, the fullscreen events page shrinks until it starts showing the previous screen, which is the calendar’s schedule list view.

This is how the feature prevents users from accidentally exiting the app in the middle of a task. The procedure is then coupled with an animation from Google Calendar that shows an inline event card contract in the list.

It’s worth mentioning that Android 13 users can also test the predictive back gesture on apps like the Google Phone and Google TV after enabling it from the Developer options. When you use the back gesture, these supported apps will show you exactly where you will reach when the step is done.

Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablet users will be able to access the Predictive back gesture with the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update next year. We might more information through the Android 14 developer preview that may start at the beginning of 2023.

What is AV1 video coding? It is a free video standard with an improved compression system that allows for huge data efficiency savings without degrading video quality. Making it mandatory for Android 14 will be key to moving forward in the world of high frame rates, 8K resolution, HDR standards, and audio demands.

As Esper’s Mishaal Rahman shared in his excellent Android 14 preview, the new AV1 requirement is codified in the Android Open Source Project Gerrit. The entry reads:

“As per Android CDD (Compatibility Definition Document) 14, section 2.2.2 and section 2.6, handheld and tablet device implementations must support decoding AV1.”

As a result, those Android device owners who are eagerly waiting for the Android 14 interface, need some modifications to their system.

In addition to this, the new report also suggets that some devices that will launch with the Android 14 operating system will be forced to support 64-bit-only apps, which means it’s finally spelling the end for 32-bit-only applications.

Regarding this, it’s most likely that the US tech giant may introduce support for the satellite connection function through the major version update of Android 14 next year, while the Developer Preview may start in March 2023.

In contrast, the satellite communication function is mainly a supplement to the terrestrial cellular communication system that is mainly used in remote areas, ocean and sky scenarios, and emergency disaster relief scenarios.

Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier revealed that Apple is indeed developing satellite communications for some of the iPhone 14 series models, and completed hardware testing ahead of mass production.

Aside from this, folks over at HC Newsroom also revealed that Huawei’s upcoming Mate 50 and Mate 50 Pro flagships will introduce special emergency functions using satellite communications.
