Samsung purchases 42 US patents from Fujifilm for OLED displays

Samsung purchased OLED display device patents from Cynorra, Germany in May and now it buys 42 US patents from Fujifilm, a Japanese multinational empire, for its future medium and large-sized OLED display products.

According to the information, the company purchased these US patents from Fujifilm in Japan in mid-September. These patents are interpreted as a reinforcement of the Oxide thin film transistors (TFT) technology.

Furthermore, Samsung primarily uses Oxide TFTs in 8th generation quantum dot (QD)-organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels devices. It appears that this time the company will use these Oxide TFTs for eighth-generation mid-sized OLEDs, which it is currently planning to invest in.

Meanwhile, the low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT technology used in the 6th generation OLED is not yet developed for the 8th generation.

The report further suggests that Samsung Display has bought US Patents from Fujifilm to complement the Oxide TFT technology. The company’s business structure is currently focused on 6th-generation small and medium-sized OLEDs, which are primarily used in smartphones, that are evaluated as a relatively weak point in oxide TFTs for large OLEDs.

Competitor LG Display has been applying oxide TFTs to large white (W)-OLEDs for almost 10 years, but Samsung Displays mass-produced QD-OLEDs with oxide TFTs since late last year.

Moreover, the domestic patents that have family ties to Samsung’s US patents are yet to be transmitted. However, each country has applied for registration, the same technology is called a family patent.

Since US patents, which are the main patents, have been transferred, it is expected that Fujifilm’s respective patents applied and registered in Korea and other countries around the world will also get transferred to Samsung Display within this year.
