One UI 5.0 Update Roadmap Netherlands

Samsung officially debuted a new privacy feature – Maintenance Mode for devices running One UI 5. When enabled, this feature hides your personal information and data while your Galaxy device is being serviced.

The Galaxy S22 series is now eligible to upgrade to the One UI 5 version, which means, users, having S22, S22 Plus or S22 Ultra can use the Maintenance Mode while submitting their phone to the service center.

Not only service centers, but you can also use the Maintenance Mode while giving your Galaxy phone or tablet to anyone for repairing purposes by blocking access to photos, messages or contacts.

In addition to photos, contacts and messages, Maintenance Mode also blocks access to installed apps. However, the service agent will be able to install apps from Galaxy Store, which will be automatically deleted once you exit the mode.

Samsung MX Division Head said:

“This is just the latest example of our constant efforts to introduce new ways to make people feel safe and in control, so they can explore new mobile experiences with peace of mind, knowing we have their back.”

How to enable Maintenance Mode

You can easily enable the Maintenance Mode feature by visiting your phone’s system Settings, followed by Battery and device care menu. Once enabled, your device requires a reboot so it can apply a separate user account.

Availability

Back in July, Samsung released the Beta program of Maintenance Mode for the Galaxy S21 series in South Korea, followed by China in September 2022. Today, the company announced its global availability, but it requires software version One UI 5, based on Android 13.

James is the lead content creator on Sammy Fans and mostly works on Samsung's firmware section. His first phone was the Galaxy S4 and continues to get new S series devices. Most of the time, James tries to learn about new technologies and gadgets but he also sneaks a bit of free time to nearby rivers and nature.

Samsung One UI 5.1 GIF Remaster Feature

samsung One UI 5.1 GIF Remaster

GIF feature is used to express emotions other than stickers. It stands for Graphics Interchange Format which supports both animated and static images. Samsung already offers a bunch of photo editing tools for Galaxy devices with One UI, and with One UI 5.1, the company has added the GIF Remaster feature.

The GIF also has unique advantages such as expressive transparent background, so it is actively used, but because it is an old format, there are quality problems. That’s why, Samsung added the GIF Remaster feature that applies the latest deep-learning techniques to improve the quality of GIF images.

samsung One UI 5.1 GIF Remaster

The company introduced the GIF Remaster feature with the Samsung Galaxy S23 series and is currently expanding to supported models only that are running on One UI 5.1 or higher. Like other Remastered features, you can access it from the Gallery suggestions screen or the Single View screen.

GIF Remaster feature

GIF Remaster uses deep learning techniques to improve picture quality. Deep learning training involves a large amount of data, so it is very effective for improving GIFs with different types and quality degradation.

How does it work?

Noise Cancellation and Upscale

The noise generated by quantization and dithering varies greatly depending on the parameter settings when creating the GIF, and the magnitude of the noise is much larger than that of later developed encoding methods.

Recreating GIFs through deep learning can effectively reduce both types of noise. Also, GIF images usually have a lower resolution. GIF Remaster upscaling up to 2x for added detail and clarity.

Transparent background GIF preprocessing

If an image with a transparent background is passed through a deep learning network, unwanted noise will be generated at the pixels at the edge of the object, as shown in the 1st image below [without preprocessing].

This is because deep learning networks also refer to the color of neighboring pixels when generating pixels at the edge of an object. The opacity of the transparent background pixels is set to 0 so that they are practically invisible, but the RGB value information (mainly black 0) is still valid, so the RGB information of this transparent pixel affects the deep learning network and reduces noise.

GIF Remastering creates results without edge noise, as shown in [Applying preprocessing] last image below, by applying a deep learning network algorithm that processes transparent background pixels to leave them unaffected. The technology is currently patented.

How’s GIF created?

GIF images are created from raw images in two main steps: lossy compression and lossless compression. The second stage, lossless compression, uses LZW encoding, which is a type of entropy encoding, similar to ZIP file compression without losing information easily. On the other hand, in lossy compression, information is lost in the first stage, resulting in a loss of quality.

Quantization

GIF converts the colors of the input pixels to 8-bit 256 or smaller, a process called quantization. Images such as JPEG represent 16,777,216 colors at 24 bits per pixel, and the difference from the original image can cause noticeable discomfort when converted to GIF.

Dithering

A process of hiding the discomfort caused by quantization error by adding artificial noise is sometimes implemented, called dithering. Dithering can make the boundaries between quantized regions smoother, but adding noise by rules can accidentally produce unpleasant noise.
