Samsung shows off the world’s first 17-inch slidable display for PCs
Samsung is a major contributor to the foldable smartphone market. So far, the company has introduced 4 generations of its Fold and Flip lineup. Meanwhile, Samsung is now taking a step further to introduce a slidable display for PCs.
On September 27, Intel held its Innovation 2022 Day event where it introduced the 13th-generation Intel Core processors for desktops. At the same event, Intel has Samsung Display’s CEO – JS Choi to show off a prototype of the world’s first 17-inch slidable display for PCs.

This working prototype showcased by Samsung featured an unmoving image that shows Samsung Display + Intel written on it. Meanwhile, Samsung Display CEO said, it is specifically created for computers with tablet-like form factors, such as the Microsoft Surface Go 3.
Besides these, the company does not reveal anything about this display so it’s hard to judge it at this moment. The screen resolution, aspect ratio, brightness, and other features are yet to be known. Even Samsung did not tell how durable this display is.
A notable part is that Samsung calls it a Slidable display instead of an Expandable screen, which suggets that the Korean company wants to differentiate its product from others.
Another highlighting part that Samsung Display’s CEO said with the introduction of a slidable display is “foldable is gone”. However, it remains to be seen if the company will launch products that actually feature this technology and if it will launch then when?

Samsung Mobile in crisis, third-quarter profit could sink 25%
Samsung Mobile Experience division is in crisis, with a 25% profit sink likely in the third-quarter. Samsung’s aggressive marketing and Galaxy AI strategy paid off, but less than expectations – resulting in operating profit harm in Q3.
South Korea’s FNGuide reports that the Samsung Mobile division could generate an operating profit of 2.6 trillion won in the third-quarter. The estimation indicates a 25% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Foldables are to be blamed?
Back in July, Samsung launched new foldable smartphones, powered by Galaxy AI. The Z Fold 6 comes with a slightly wider screen made possible through design refinements. However, the Z Flip 6 has no changes from its predecessor in looks.
Thanks to Galaxy AI, Samsung’s Z6 foldables garnered attention. Their performance has been weaker than expected given the slow pace of recovery globally. The Galaxy S24 series sales were also not impressive despite the swift pace after launch.
The South Korean tech giant is implementing measures such as cost-cutting for processors. Still, industry experts suggest that improving software competitiveness is essential for creating new revenue streams.
After Galaxy AI-powered S24, Z Flip 6, and Z Fold 6, Samsung strengthened its AI ecosystem with the Tab S10 series and the S24 FE. Despite this much effort, the performance of the MX division has not shown signs of recovery.
IDC reported that Samsung led the smartphone market in the second quarter with an 18% share. Despite fierce competition, Apple was the runner-up with a 16% share, while Xiaomi retained its third rank with a 15% market share.

Here’s why Samsung doesn’t support free widget resizing
Some Samsung Galaxy users have recently raised concerns about the pop-up windows for widgets on their devices. They want to resize the widgets to make them more suitable for one-handed operation, but they are unable to do so.
The main issue is that users want to resize these widgets more freely. Instead of being stuck with fixed sizes, they want to be able to adjust the size by dragging, which would make it much easier to use their devices comfortably.
Currently, most widgets only come in fixed sizes. Users mentioned that smaller widgets often look unattractive with too much empty space around them. This not only makes the screen look messy but also makes it harder to use the device with one hand.
However, a Samsung Community moderator has acknowledged the feedback. He has mentioned that while some apps allow for different widget sizes, most only support a limited selection of fixed sizes. This is due to avoiding widgets being cut off or not showing up properly.
Unfortunately, the option to freely resize all widgets isn’t available right now. This is made to keep the design clean and well-optimized. However, it can make using a device with one hand more difficult but you will surely get useful information on widgets instead of incomplete ones.
As more users express the need for better one-handed usability, Samsung is listing feedback to working on As more users request improved one-handed usability, Samsung is listening to feedback and working on optimizing widget sizes.
Allowing users to customize these sizes could make devices much easier to use, though it may also lead to some issues. However, Samsung is regularly working to provide a better experience that meets user needs. Users can expect more updates and changes related to widgets in the future.
