Samsung quarterly profit could fall 25% for the first time in last three years
Samsung is ruling the Android smartphone market for years. The company’s profit has only increased in the previous few years. But as per a new information, 2023’s Samsung quarterly profit could fall 25%, the first year-on-year decline in the last three years.
According to the report by Refinitiv SmartEstimate from 22 analysts (via Reuters), Samsung’s operating profit, the world’s largest maker of memory chips and smartphones, could fall to 11.8 trillion won (around $8.3 billion) in the July-September quarter.
The information further suggets that Samsung is facing a quarterly profit fall of a massive 25% due to the economic downturn that ruined demand for electronic components and the chips that power them.
Globally, central banks are aggressively raising interest rates, fears of a recession are rising and there is always uncertainty about the outcome of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As a result, businesses and consumers alike have denied spending.
Furthermore, this is the first time that the Korean company’s profit decline is happening since the first quarter of the year 2020 and the lowest level of quarterly profit since the first quarter of 2021. As of this latest quarter, strong demand for devices as people were forced to stay at home has resulted in big gains for Samsung.
Going by the information, Samsung’s mobile business is expected to see a drop in profits, with a 17% decline predicted to fall of 2.8 trillion won. However, the launch of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 during the quarter pushed up the average selling price.
At the same time, Samsung’s chipset business is also likely to fall by nearly a third to 6.8 trillion won, an average of seven estimates showed. On the other side, some DRAM memory chip prices that are widely used in smartphones and PCs might fall by 14% in the quarter, whereas, the prices for NAND flash chips used in data storage could fall by 8%.
Samsung shows off the world’s first 17-inch slidable display for PCs
Samsung is a major contributor to the foldable smartphone market. So far, the company has introduced 4 generations of its Fold and Flip lineup. Meanwhile, Samsung is now taking a step further to introduce a slidable display for PCs.
On September 27, Intel held its Innovation 2022 Day event where it introduced the 13th-generation Intel Core processors for desktops. At the same event, Intel has Samsung Display’s CEO – JS Choi to show off a prototype of the world’s first 17-inch slidable display for PCs.
According to the report, it is basically a 13-inch display that can be extended as much larger as 17-inch. You can simply pull the display which will unroll the hidden portion of the screen.
This working prototype showcased by Samsung featured an unmoving image that shows Samsung Display + Intel written on it. Meanwhile, Samsung Display CEO said, it is specifically created for computers with tablet-like form factors, such as the Microsoft Surface Go 3.
Besides these, the company does not reveal anything about this display so it’s hard to judge it at this moment. The screen resolution, aspect ratio, brightness, and other features are yet to be known. Even Samsung did not tell how durable this display is.
A notable part is that Samsung calls it a Slidable display instead of an Expandable screen, which suggets that the Korean company wants to differentiate its product from others.
Another highlighting part that Samsung Display’s CEO said with the introduction of a slidable display is “foldable is gone”. However, it remains to be seen if the company will launch products that actually feature this technology and if it will launch then when?
