Samsung One UI 4.1 Portrait Mode

Capturing a portrait photo is as easy as choosing the mode from the slew of options, pointing your phone at your subject, and clicking the shutter button. But is it enough knowledge to click a photo like a ‘Pro’? Of course, not.

Meanwhile, I am here with some tips on how to capture photos like a pro with One UI 4.1-based Portrait Mode on your Samsung smartphone.

Few things you should remember while using Portrait mode

Distance

The greater the distance between your phone and the background, the better the blurred background will turn out. Meanwhile, in order to create a better surface depth of field effect, make sure that you get close enough to the subject with your smartphone camera.

Background:

Choose an interesting background. You should choose a non-distracting color or pattern that isn’t bright or distracting in any way. Your eyes will be drawn to the subject of the image, which is very important in portrait photography.

Gear up smartly:

You should make sure that your camera remains stable, either by using a tripod or by leaning your phone on a fixed object.

Lighting:

Never use your phone’s flashlight, it usually doesn’t contribute to making a stunning photograph. It can quickly turn your pictures into flat, overly bright, and unappealing results.

Instead, go for natural light. You can also bring external lighting when the natural light source is not enough.

Editing:

Your phone captures stunning photos. But try editing your pictures with Lightroom or Photoshop for mobile to make them look better. You can even get great results with Snapseed, if used correctly.

  • Open the Camera of your smartphone.
  • Tap on the More option.
  • Click on Portrait.
  • Tap the circle in the bottom right of the viewfinder.
    • The options can be altered using the slider.

Note: On the Galaxy S22 series, Portrait will be available at the bottom of the screen after opening the Camera app.

Portrait mode options:

  • Blur: This will blur the background around the subject, like Live Focus on previous devices.
  • Studio: This applies a brightening effect to the subject but does not brighten the background, making the subject the main focal point.
  • High-key mono: Creates a monochromatic effect with high brightness. The entire picture and subject will appear in black and white.
  • Low-key mono: Similar to High-key mono where the picture appears in black and white. However, it uses low brightness instead.
  • Backdrop: Grays out the background around the subject with a gradient effect, while the subject itself still has color.
  • Color point: Changes the sharpness of the colors directly around your subject, so everything else looks darker and the subject stands out.

This feature allows for customization of photo attributes such as sharpness, contrast, and brightness. For example, selecting the minimum level results in more natural-looking images, while the maximum level increases detail and sharpness, which is ideal for zoomed-in shots. Notably, the quality optimization setting of these levels only affects Photo Mode.

If you enable Scene Optimizer, it automatically optimizes the color and contrast of pictures to make dark scenes look brighter, food looks tastier and landscapes look more vivid.
