Apple to obtain foldable display and technology from Samsung Display!

Apple is recently in the news that it has started developing the display and technology that is a proprietary technology of Samsung that has been already implemented in its Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 earlier.

Apple has a new challenge in creating a sturdy foldable screen, and the most complicated part is to make them thin enough and to make them continuously work while folding and unfolding for years.

What does Samsung’s foldable technology consist of?

The OLED screen is packed and stacked with separate layers altogether, and each layer has its own functions to perform. Such as backlighting, content, touch, filtering, protection, and more.

To prepare a third-gen foldable the company has eliminated the polarizer layer for preparing a more flexible Galaxy Z fold. This latest technology by Samsung claims three times more light transmittance and 25 percent more power saving.

Instead of using a polarizer, Samsung is stitching a color film on a foldable screen that will work as a filter and an encapsulator, which is known as CF on TFE. Additionally, a polyamide layer is used for the black pixel defining layer.

What Apple is trying for?

Apple has begun the development of OLED panels using Samsung’s technique. It has also removed the polarizer that is used to allow light in certain directions to pass through and improves the visibility of the display.

The disadvantage of removing the polarizer

  • Uneven brightness at the display due to a lot of multi-directional light available in front of the smartphone user.
  • Effects on the luminance efficiency of the panel.
  • Increased power consumption of the panel, lessens its life span (the device needs to work with increased brightness to facilitate the user).

It looks like a complete challenge for Apple to experiment with a foldable iPhone display but has seemingly not been successful till now. It has two options either it can build its own display technology or can outsource the production from Samsung Display.

We all know currently Samsung has a more advanced display manufacturing facility. So Samsung would definitely love to become a sole supplier for Apple foldable displays if Apple approaches.
